So when Raincoast books offered me a chance to review some comic books, my interest was peaked due to my niece's work.
I like what she shares on facebook and think she does some excellent work. :) You can check out her work here.
Today I looked at "The Only Living Boy". This comic book is written by Gallaher and is illustrated by Steve Ellis.
It's not half bad, it's an excellent beginning to a series. It would be interesting to continue reading the series and find out what type of person Eric becomes. Will he stay a lad who would rather run away and then chooses to talk himself into being helpful and brave, or will being brave start to come more naturally to him?
My son had zero interest in reading it, he looked at the pictures and just totally passed on it. I'm not sure if that's uncertainty as it's a new format for him, or if the genre just doesn't interest him.
The graphics are well done, and bring the story to life, making Eric seem like a real kid caught up in something he totally doesn't understand.
BOOK SYNOPSIS:
If you were the only living boy on the planet, what would you do? When 12-year old Erik Farrell runs away from home, he finds himself without his memory, stranded on a patchwork planet with danger lurking around every corner. Now every day is a struggle to survive. Luckily, Erik quickly makes friends like Morgan, a mermaid warrior and Thea, a teenage princess from a mysterious insect race. He'll need their help to escape the dreaded Lord Baalikar and the evil Doctor Once and maybe, one day, find his way back home. |
See.. I did learn something in my research. Illustrations such as this are called Manga. These sites can help you learn to draw this way.
