Rise of the Guardians - Movie Review

12/16/2012

Picture
Since dad was sick and the lad needed to get out of the house, we headed to London on Friday.

We sold a guinea pig and cage, a rabbit, collected dollars from another guinea pig sale, did some Christmas shopping and watched "rise of the guardians".

Good movie.

Homeschooling part: critique the movie.   "I liked it mom.   I wouldn't change anything except I wish one of the children would have dreamed up a  Spider FBI person to help fight the bad guy."

So what do the people stand for?   He remembered that Santa is wonder and the teeth fairy help you remember things.  Oh... and Jack Frost likes to have fun.

My thoughts were: overall the move was a good movie.   In our household we believe that God is the provider of all things, not Santa or the Sandman or anything else.   But it was fun to watch.   The lad thinks it is silly that people believe in Santa and such like because God loves us mom right?

I found it interesting how they brought out that the mature Guardians had for the most part forgotten about the children, and Jack Frost reminded them of the children.

But in this household we know that the holidays are not all about making children happy.  They aren't.  It's a good side bonus.  But Christmas is remembering and looking forward to Christ.   Easter is knowing what he did for us, his very own children.   The tooth fairy...ack...it's just fun to get money for your teeth.  Sandman doesn't even register for me.  And the Bogeyman and Jack Frost?  Well...they are pretend.  And pretending makes for VERY good stories.  :)

Heads Up: Unit Study Emporium has 50% sale for Christmas

If you go to homeschool freebie of the day, the freebie today is from Lynda who runs USE.     Gives you an idea of the quality of her work.

In the past I've gotten Far Above Rubies and if I could find it, I thought I had Blessed is the Man as well from her.  She does good work, everything I have seen from her is very biblically focused.

Anyways, check out her catalogue here.  :)

Art for Christmas

12/12/2012

Christmas Craft

The lad and I were just chatting as we were doing angry bird pictures and playing with our magnet art, and I mentioned how we planned to get a tree with afternoon.

I was also browsing through some books trying to decide what to keep and what to recycle.  I came to an old book called "Nature at hand" (so old it doesn't have a ISBN).  It was written by Joan Wheaton Buma.  You can find more about the book here.

They had a craft in there that looked intriguing.
Instructions
Take a piece of paper, fold it in half, make a tree shape that is symmetrical.
Go outside and find a pine tree and take off a short piece to use as a paint brush.
Put your paint into a low rather flat container and use the pine branch to paint with.  It will take a bit of exploration to do.
As you can see, the lad and I had different results based on how we painted.

If you want, when done, you can decorate your trees.  We'll be using ours in finishing up our Jesse Tree Devotionals.  the tree we cut out is too small and we'll use these little trees to give more room for the story cut outs. :)

Angry Bird Art

The lad has been learning about copyright, trademarks and not wasting good dollars spent.  To that end, he's been having a great deal of fun copying pictures out of this angry bird book.  He is designing his own stories, combining pages, asking lots of questions, and being using that noggin of his.   it's been fun.  AND>>> he is colouring!  MY boy who doesn't like to colour, he'd rather create and design stories rather than just colour some page that someone has created...even if they did a good job.  He's colouring!!!   :)  And I'm having fun with him.   I wonder what tomorrow will hold in this regard?   :)

learning from books

12/12/2012

Picture
Above are the three books we are reading in the morning.

This morning we learned about the ring-necked snake.   we learned that when caught these snakes will thrash about and release a foul-smelling musk.

This led to a discussion about what a child should do if a stranger grabs them and tries to take them away from mom and dad and what one should do.  Trash about and make a lot of noise (a persons way of making a big stink).   Do everything you can to scare them away (just like a snake).   :)
this led to the discovery of this two-headed snake video.

From our history books

we learned about johann ludwig burckhardt discovering Petra.
and about the teenagers discovering the cave in Lascaux, France
Off and on throughout the day we took breaks to build robots and interesting art out of a large magnet and some metal bits.

The Last Christmas - a story told in parts

12/12/2012

So far I'm curious and want to know where this story will lead.

The Last Christmas written by the Family Man

wolf spider with babies

"why did one of her babies leave"? was the distressed question

Goliath bird-eating spider

12/11/2012

i don't know this spider is one on the 60th deadliest as he tells us right in the video that the bite won't kill a person.   But that the hairs are more of an issue.

Peacock Spiders

This video very much intrigued the lad and I.   What a very neat display, what creativity by God.
