Seymour Simon, the dean of children's science nonfiction, investigates Earth's biggest, smallest, deepest, and coldest environments, animals, plants, and most severe weather. These mind-bending facts and photographs invite readers on an exciting, and sometimes unbelievable, scientific expeditionof Earth's most amazing records!
My Thoughts:
This was one of those leave it around where a boy can find it and see what happens type of books. And you know what... a curious boy will pick it up and then he'll say "Mom, did you know the tallest waterfall is a plunge waterfall and it's called Angel Falls?"
So then a person goes and finds a youtube video of it so a lad can actually see the waterfall in question. "Oh neat. It looks REALLY high. Why doesn't it have water like at Niagara Falls?" Ah... I love questions don't you? Having a chance to learn about cliff faces and how water runs over them. It's good you know?
You get 12 chapters. Ranging from the highest place, to the lowest. All the extremes of the earth. Tsunamis, earthquates, heat, cold and more. It's an interesting book. Easily read by elementary aged readers. My son stumbled over country names (or ignored them). But overall my 10 year thought it was an interesting book (so did I). :)
It's full of great pictures, easy to read text, colourful pages easily distinguish one chapter from another. It's a wonderful book to teach children about the interesting extremes of earth that will fascinate children.
