Miss Howe was the missionary lady who adopted her. She became part of the new school that she was starting for teaching girls. In those days Chinese girls weren't educated, it wasn't thought to be possible and therefore rather of waste of time. By adopting and educating these little girls, Miss Howe was able to show the Chinese who well she could care for them AND that girls can be educated too. Over the years, more and more Chinese girls came to be educated.
Another Chinese girl was educated along with her, and together these two friends became doctors. Dr. Ida and Dr. Mary Stone worked together in China helping to start a Christian hospital in Kiukiang.
One day as they were treating patients a wealthy man came and took them to Nanchang because his wife was very ill. This opened the door to eventually starting a church and a hospital in Nanchang as well.
God used this poor unwanted girl to bring Christ to China and opened the door to modern medicine as well.
