Good information, a variety of activities and information.
It would be good pair this book, or at least look at it, when studying different cultures. Would be a great add-on you know, or even just a stand alone unit.

Just so you know, affiliate links are used in this post. It's only to help out this blog and our homeschooling journey. Seriously, if you make a purchase it will be a blessing to me and it costs you nothing extra. :) You know how I've invited you in the past to get a subsciption to SchoolhouseTeachers.com? Well...here's ANOTHER reason (not that you really need one) to get a subscription, not only do you get over 275 courses to choose from, to work through on your own schedule, but you get access to World Book E-books. AND get this... THEY HAVE AN ART SECTION!!!!!! How great is that eh? :) They have at least five books there, but there are tons more in different areas, but since we're talking art here, we'll talk art. :) I specifically checked out this one. I liked what I saw. Good information, a variety of activities and information. It would be good pair this book, or at least look at it, when studying different cultures. Would be a great add-on you know, or even just a stand alone unit. I liked the variety of the activities, stitching, painting, and so much more. I strongly urge you to check out SchoolhouseTeachers.com. These really cool art books to check out, over 275 courses and tons of world book ebooks to add to your resource list. Good stuff seriously!

Kids need Heroes, you know that right? Their folks serve well as heroes, and then as time goes on they find new people to emulate. Right now my boy is fascinated by the character Will in the Ranger's Apprentice. He has built entire stories around him. How he's good, how he trains others to work and fight hard, how he works with a team for the safety of his people. It's SO GOOD to see him with a good hero. But you know what's even better.... when children have biblical Heroes as well. When they have people of faith to look up to. People like Joseph and Moses, Ruth and Esther. People, just regular people, that God loved and worked with. So let me tell you about Grapevine Studies.. they have a "heroes" bundle for you this month. Can you imagine...you can save 20% this month if you get the bundle. Help your children develop some biblical heroes as well.
Grapevine is one of my favourite methods of studying the bible. Drawing pictures as you put God's word into your heart and mind.. EXCELLENT. :) Keeps hands busy and minds thinking. Maps, history, and God in action. It's GOOD.
You need to check out this sale though eh? Just to clarify, 20% off until July 31st. Nice eh? Get a copy, use your own bible translation if you want to, get your children talking and learning about the bible, let them draw the pictures their own way if they don't like the suggested picture, let them draw their own....sometimes that brings out additional questions and more learning happens.. it's totally cool when that happens! Anyways, check out the sale today. :) I don't know about you but math can be a hard subject to teach, particularly if you have a boy that is resistent to the learning of it. “It's either too hard to too easy:” Which can be frustrating. :) But one thing I have learned, is once you find something that works, it works. It's just a matter of figuring out what makes your child tick when it comes to learning something new. Well I need to tell you this... educents has something new lined up just for you. Life of Fred is a math curriculum that works well for many children. If you have been with Fred through the elementary set, then you will not want to miss this 3-book Life of Fred intermediate set. If you have NOT met Fred, this would be a great place to get to get started!! Designed for students under age 12, but already finished the Life of Fred elementary book series. Best for students who can add, subtract, and who understand multiplication and division. Overview: In the Intermediate series, students continue doing algebra they learned in the elementary series, but they also learn to identify and build functions, set theory, how to analyze mathematically logic arguments, and arithmetic sequences. Also, each book is filled with teasers about future books: “Name one solution for x3=64. There are two other solutions, but you won’t be able to name then until you have had the last week of trig.” Who is it for? 3rd to 7th grade Concepts covered: Milliliters, writing numerals in checks ($4000 and not $40.00), idioms, 1/4 + 1/4 +1/4 = 3/4, elapsed time, metaphors, milligrams and pounds, rounding numbers, three-eights of 19,416, and more! Titles in this series: Kidneys, Liver, Mineshaft Your lessons can come to life with the Fred doll & Kingie doll! What people are saying about the books:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWL_hgyEmEk “I was not so sure on these books. I heard a lot of good reviews but after we got them, just skimming through I wasn't sure my 9-year-old daughter would like them. I was WRONG! She really likes them! They move at a pace she likes and being one continuous story about Fred's life keeps her interested and entertained. We will be back for more soon. She just finished Kidneys and is now on Liver.” -Melisa W. "We've gone through many math programs since I began homeschooling, but the passion never returned. In fact, my son had grown to hate it. Math had become something we both dreaded. I ordered this set, and all that has changed!! By using these books, we have identified what concepts he was never taught, or just didn't grasp. He told us that he wished he could just start from the beginning with the Life of Fred. My husband and I are expecting that shipment to arrive this week, and will be ordering Fractions, Decimals, and Pre-Algebra next!" -Janet C.
Last week was a snowy week... We had over two feet of snow dumped on us over a period of three days... and this week there is more coming. So what do YOU do on those snowy days where doing school seems so VERY optional?
We had a day like that yesterday. Snow falling still, mom and boy with no desire to do school so we opted out.. we did a Project instead.. we worked on building a bigger feeder for the lad's mice... we'll need to rework it a bit more yet. :) But it gave us a time to problem solve, to work with new materials, and to communicate with each other differently over our schooling/work. It was a fun way for us to do math that seems practical rather than "AH MORE WRITING!!! If you need a different option for doing math, Educents just might have the answer for you.

I have to admit that I am not feeling particularly good today so am feeling very scattered.
Our day started the normal way: Caring for the critters, having breakfast (this morning we did alphabet cereal) with water to drink. The lad did Veritas Press. I have to admit, the picture is from two years ago, but it's the same program just an older child using the Explorers study. And now he uses my laptop for the most part. :)
He learned about gears today in Machines and Motion. We'll be doing some experiments on Friday to further our learning on wheels, gears and the like. We learned about four types of gears: Rack and pinion, Bevel, Worm gear, and Spur.
We followed this up with doing a logic puzzle, math, English lessons and his page out of the Canadian Curriculum book grade 5. Today he chose to do a page on the weather. Our word of the day was Adlib. We finished up our day doing a lesson out of Grapevine Studies. We learned about the story of Abram, Sarai and Hagar today. Our memory verse is this:
For lunch we'll probably do soup and a sandwich. I'm going to have a meeting this afternoon, and hopefully if the weather is good and I start feeling less scattered, run out to the feed store. It was a short day, but overall productive I think. Good for a "snow day" for the public schools... if I don't head out to London I'll grab the lad and we'll go out and play in the snow for a bit.. make snow while the cold weather lasts. :)

Today the focus was on Michelangelo and how he used to go to the quarry for marble to make sculptures. As marble is out of my price range, we made do with soap.
The leftovers from the DOVE soap bar my lad stuck in the microwave, hoping it would completely blow up, .. it expanded but blow up it did not. The softened soap was then moulded into an art project as well but "MOM NO, no picture of this guy." :) |
