Word Blog Hop: Captious and Asseverate

3/21/2013

The use of words

I, on occasion, do the word blog hop.  I can't always fit it into my schedule but when I can, it is fun to do so.

This weeks words are Captious and Asseverate.  I've not heard of those words before so this should be a bit of a challenge.

This Blog Hop is hosted by Hidden Valley Simplicity.

Using the words

The other day I was reading about how a contentious wife is like a dripping fountain (yes, it's biblical) and then last night I was watching Fringe and a line oft repeated was ... You need to make a choice about the kind of person you want to be.

When I looked at the word captious it drew those two events together.   A captious person draws attention to the faults of others, they are critical and liking to entangle others in arguments.   I have a female rabbit with much the same personality.  I love her to bits, but my...she keeps me on my toes.

I also have to deal with a lady in my church who is rather captious.   And I am finding that I NEED to change my attitude in regards to her.  It is simply part of who she is and I must not take her attitude to heart about me PERSONALLY.

I do so wish she was a person who could easily asseverate.  People who do that are SO much easier to love.  But you know what..... God doesn't call us to just love the easy to love people.  He calls us simply to love....to especially love our Christian brothers and sisters.     He doesn't tell us it will always be easy, but simply that we are to do it.

So be a person who is Captious or be a person who can Asseverate, God's call on me is the same....LOVE them.

Therefore, I must make the choice to do so, because LOVE is action, not just a .  It is a choice.   And so this I will choose.  :)

Truth in Words

Word of the Week:

captious:
1. marked by an often ill-natured inclination to stress faults and raise objections

2. calculated to confuse, entrap, or entangle in argument

3. apt to make notice of trivial faults; critical

Super Challenge: asseverate: to affirm or declare positively or firmly

Crisis in Homeschooling - Teaching Creatively Blog Hop

3/14/2013

The Topic For Today: Homeschooling in a Crisis: From illness and death, to a sudden move or loss of job, crises abound and most of us just keep on keeping on.
Homeschooling this year has at times been a challenge and this has necessitated some changes in how we did things.

Crisis

1. Poor health on the part of mom for an extended period of time (September to February).  I continue to battle some days but most of the time it's pretty good.  :)  Woot Woot!  :)
2. Four funerals in one month with hubby as preacher.

Solution

1. I was forced to be more organized.  Being organized does not come naturally to me so this has been an adjustment.  And... as I feel better we are getting less organized.  :)

2. Taking time off and learning that some things in life are more important than just getting the school work done.    The lad attended two of the four funerals and for two of them he went to visit another homeschooling family for two days.   Too much death for one seven year old lad.

The Specifics

In organization I do the following
1. I have a checklist.  And it's just a matter of checking off... did we do this, this and that?
2. I tried a couple of things
a. folders where I would place the material that he needed to accomplish in it.  Get through the folder done the day.   The lad sorted like this and sorta didn't.  Some days had lots of stuff and that would just stress him out so he didn't want to do any of it.  When I'm not well battling just doesn't happen.  I also have a strong dislike for ripping pages out of books, just doesn't set well with me.
b. boxes.   I got some scrapbooking bins to put things into as they were larger and I could just shift from one bin to the next with no pressure to complete.    This was a complete dud.  Fortunately though, the bins are currently being used for something else. :)

Overall what is working best is just having a checklist.  And it's done in such a way that I can write in what we do and it makes it really easy to give the boy his stickers for doing the work without complaining.   And if we don't get things done. well...there are other days in the world.  Removes the pressure from both of us to "get through the list" and allows us to see at the end of the week what we did accomplish.

Dealing with Funerals

When dad is really busy his being an introvert kicks into high gear.  He requires time along and time QUIET.

To that end we engaged in field trips and let's get out of the house and away time.

We went to visit friends.
We went to a museum.  We had fun visiting Jumbo the elephant and learning some local history.
We went for walks.
Picture
We kept the house as quiet as possible so that Dad could actually get his work done without being stressed out by it all.  It was a tough month but through God's grace we got through it relatively unscathed.

The beauty of homeschooling is the realization that even if life is tough at times learning can and does continue.   Sometimes at a slower pace, sometimes in a different venue and having support and help is a boon and blessing.   Life is all about learning, it's just a matter of figuring out how to accomplish it on the given to us.  :)

Kitchen Time

3/12/2013

Cooking in the kitchen.   This is part of the Teaching Creatively blog hop.

Why on earth would someone use the kitchen as a place to do school?
How would someone use the kitchen to do school?

Well, because in the kitchen, you can do math, language arts, history, social studies, science and whatever else you can throw into the mix.

An example

Picture
In the picture above my lad is learning to make French Toast.   We got the recipe out of a book which is easier for him to read (language arts).   It was a recipe I was unfamiliar with BUT did things differently then how I grew up.  This was the important part.    This recipe called for dipping the bread in the egg/milk mixture and then frying it directly in some fat/grease/butter whatever was available.    When I grew up I learned to first butter the bread and then dip it.    I explained that to my lad  (history/social studies) so he wanted to experiment with which way was better (science) so we each had two slices of french toast.   One for each way of doing it.     We flavoured them ..one half of each piece with cinnamon toast and one half with maple syrup.

The winner... the way Mom was raised with making Friench toast sweetened with cinnamon sugar.

So now my picky with food lad has another item of food that he'll willingly eat (as long as we do it mom's way) and I have a lad who learned that sometimes recipes need to be tweaked.

Geography and Social Studies within a Unit Study

This year we are studying Canada as a major part of our course of study, this will be a least a year, probably more study for us.

We started with just understanding the world, and have moved on to studying the first nations people.  Within that study we are making some of the foods of the first nations people.

Indian Bread from the Eastern Woodlands People

Tonight we hope to make fish soup!  :)  Which was a staple of the Coastal peoples.  The Inuit ate a lot of fish as well BUT I won't do raw food which the Inuit did a lot of due to having no fuel by which to cook, so we'll have the next best thing...Fish COOKED.  :)

By studying the First Nations people the lad is learning geography and when we do cook, he needs to figure out where on the map this food is an example of.

So far this a good thing, though I must admit....we are both a little leery of trying fish soup!   I'll report back. :)

Child-led, or Delight-directed Learning

3/10/2013

This is the theme for today's Teaching Creatively Blog Hop.

So just what IS delight-directed learning?

In a nut shell it is using what the child is interested in, in order to help train and/or teach them what they need to know.  That's it.    It's nothing too fancy.  :)  I use it in my homeschooling, but not exclusively.

I cannot say that everything I teach my son is child-led.  it isn't, but let's say I'm teaching him math.... What does it matter to me if I take something he loves...say SPIDERS and I make up a story about spiders, but in order for me to continue to tell the story he has to help the momma spider figure out just how many babies she has left, and how many things she needs to protect them from?  (after all wolf spiders are known to carry their babies on their back)   What does it matter?  He's still learning math...he's just engaged in it because it's important to know how many baby spiders are left because they need to avoid all the big spiders, the birds and such like that like EAT baby spiders.   (that is what we did last year).

This year, is different, my lad has a fascination for all things angry birds.  He loves battles and armour and fighting and protecting and helping.   OH MY.  :)   He's very boyish in this regard.  :)   He's learning to be a protector of the household and that's a good thing, and if I can tie this love into doing schooling.... tis a good thing is it not?

For instance lately we are studying Canada.  We live in Canada so it's a natural thing to want to do.   Studying the First Nations people comes into play with that.  So I tie in his love of drawing pictures, with knowledge of the different types of First Nations people (who had to hunt and fight and protect their families), with his love of angry birds and voila...we do art, history, science, math, geography, language arts and it's all tied up into battles, protection, and angry birds (and their pig counterparts).
Picture
Here the lad is drawing a pig shaped igloo, with a boy pig making sure smoke can come out the top while calling directions to the dad pig who is hunting for a seal. He's got the angle of the snow bricks down pat, and creating a story from what he knows using characters that he loves.
Sometimes delights have to be delayed.  For instance, last year the lad mentioned he wanted to learn to play jazz.  Go figure Jazz?   He heard a CD and loved it.  Since then I've been trying to figure out how to add music to our homeschool so that he can indeed LEARN how to play jazz.  We listen to music but that's about as far as we gotten because I inquired into lessons to learn and it's out of my budget.

BUT this year, I'm part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew and I have the JOY and PRIVILEGE of teaching my boy music at home and he's having a blast.  Today he kept running his fingers up and down the key board.  He's gaining confidence and asking questions.  He's delighted about learning music.  The music program that we have I will continue to use and hopefully by the end of the year he'll be doing some simply jazz tunes and I'll have fulfilled a promise to teach him some jazz.  :)   And then we'll move on to the guitar I think as I think they use the guitar in jazz too don't they????
Picture
enjoying learning to play music he is. :)
Delight directed learning, is simply to learn what your children like and follow it.  Tie it in however you can.   If they are learning to read and find Dick and Jane boring, well then find a similar level book about whales, spiders, princesses or whatever.   Get them interested and curious and they will learn, guaranteed.  :)

Just have fun with it, it's really not that hard.

How do YOU use delighted-directed/child-led learning in YOUR homeschool?  I'd love to know, leave a comment and we'll talk. :)

Enjoyment in teaching

2/2/2013

As part of a blog cruise the question is put to me "what subject do I enjoy teaching the most".  It's be released on Feb 12.

I don't even hesitate to say.... whatever the lad is interested in at the moment.

You know...those spontaneous Mom questions "mom, why doesn't God make it so everything can change like a grouper can?'  Wouldn't that be handy mom?"

I can't remember...ah.. now I remember.  We were reading one of the Riley adventures books.
In this book the author talked about how groupers are all born female but how some of them can turn into males when they are a year old.  Pretty neat huh?   That just grabbed the lad's attention and so we learned that most animals do not have this ability but some other animals do as well.  Limpets, some worms, a type of fish called a sheephead that is born male but turns into a female, and a variety of other fishes as well.   It's like WOW!   Rather neat eh?  :)

This process is called sequential hermaphroditism.   Which I told the lad but he promptly forgot.  :)    But he found it interesting indeed...even where it is mostly aquatic species that have this ability.  YaleNews was helpful in explaining why more animals don't do this.

Anyways, I find doing this kind of learning the easiest.  It is spontaneous.  it is easily remembered.  AND it is good learning.

By the by...if you want books that can be good conversation starters among animal interested children...these Adventures of Riley books are excellent!

Word Blog Hop Challenge

1/30/2013

This post is part of the World Blog Hop Challenge put on By Hidden Valley Simplicity.

Part One:

Subreption

Lie, lie tell me why
hide yourself in plain sight
Lie, lie tell me why
is it not hard to keep things straight?

Lie, lie tell me why
Do you want to cause a fright?
Lie, lie tell me why
Can not truth be your mate?

Part Two:

What is that noise?
The young one said
That noise that's banging in my head?

What is that noise
The old one said
That noise that calling me from bed?

and through the window they both heard
the plangent music of the band
the trumpets blared
the trumpets moaned
Their plangent offering brought them all.

Living with an Artsy Boy

1/27/2013

Doing up this post for the Virtual Curriculum Fair.     The theme for this fair is : Seeking Beauty: the Arts and Everything that Brings Beauty to Our World.

I live with an artsy drawy boy.   it's what he does.  he tells stories, he draws picture, he's always got something he wants to have a story about or a picture to draw.

Here's how I utilize that in our curriculum.
Picture
When studying acids and bases we drew pictures.  :)
we will read poetry until something captures our imagination and then we'll draw a picture from it.  sometimes we see elements that the other person has added that we go WHOA COOL I wanna do that too!
Picture
We will have fun making collages.   We'll be doing this with each of the provinces as we study them this year.

Storytelling with math

One of the things I will often do with my lad to help him see math in real life is to tell a story about something he is interested in, and as I tell the story I add in some math facts.   For instance one day a spider was sitting in a tree and she spotted hungry robin about to swoop down on her.  This robin had three babies who were also hungry and looking for food...so spider had to quickly zoom into a hiding spot but OH NO it was taken ACK...tell me quickly now...how many robins were after the spider???

Art in Geography

a model of the earth's layers anyone?  :)

Nature Study is a natural

Study the beauty in all that God has given us.  Occasionally take a moment to draw it as well.

Including beauty in our schooling in easy.... and done in so many different ways.  I look forward to seeing what others do with it as well. :)

Word Blog Hop Challenge

1/8/2013

Each week two words will be given that we're to use to show that we know the meaning of them.   I thought cool...give me story ideas. :)

Granted...before I told my son a story out of my head tonight about Zephyr and Arboretum...I wasn't exactly sure what zephyr meant so my story wasn't quite accurate, but anyways, here goes... perhaps YOU can see where I went wrong.  :)

Once upon a time there was a lovely arboretum.  it was filled with plants of all sorts, big, small, flowering, fruiting, mostly trees with supporting other fauna.  This arboretum was located in a large green area behind the University of Socks.   LOTS of people worked and studied there, the trees and plants had all sorts of visitors.

One night the arboretum had another visitor.  A zephyr decided to stop by for a while.  The zephyr was a fairly normal zephyr.  Gentle with a quiet attitude.  The zephyr did NOT want to cause trouble, he just wanted to check things out.  Find a lovely meal, settle down for a nice nap, and just chill out for a while.

The zephyr did that, made a lovely bed of trees and leaves.  Had a quiet nap and was RUDELY awakened by an ear piercing scream!

Oh heavens the zephyr muttered... What in the world is going on?

i must say... zephyrs...even when rudely awakened remain fairly calm for the most part.   They don't like to make a fuss...but someone screaming in their ear is enough to make any zephyr sit up and roar.

That action of course caused MORE screaming and even some fainting.
The zephyr was quite puzzled by all this and wondered what to do.

So he got up, stretched long and hard.. joints popping and cracking as they are apt to do when a Zephyr gets up for the day.   Hungry the zephyr helped himself to some fruit on the tree, pulling down fruit, leaves, branches and all.
Then with a satisfying burp ambled away.   Leaving the noisiness behind, and going to the silence he craved.

I did add more to the story, fitting in details that seven year old boys love, but figured this was enough for the blog. :)

Truth:

Zephyr
    A noun meaning:
  1.     A soft gentle breeze.
  2.     A fine cotton gingham.
Arboretum
    A Noun meaning:
A botanical garden devoted to trees.
