Five On the Fifth - April

I appreciated the Question and post posed here by Rebecca Ray, about What's in Your Hand?

I thought it a nicely written article that encourages us to use what we have in hand.  Be willing to use what you have for the Lord.

"
We think we’re weak.  We think we’re too small and weak and have no skill for the work ahead.  God sees our skills.  God sees what’s in our hand."

The Privilege of the Pastor's Wife.  Five good points in this article that folk like me (Pastor's wife) don't always think about... it's too easy to think of our isolation and lack of quality friendship or the really high expectations people put on you.   But this article turns that perspective on its head and is worth reading.

Leah's answers well a homeschool myth in this post. "I could never teach my child anything."  So I think it's worth a read for others as well.   I am so pleased that she says it so much nicer than I think and so she encourages me to again, think before I speak (which I usually do).   But I'd like to avoid the internal snort that I can be apt to do.  :)  (yes I know.. being much too honest here I'm sure).

Michele's honesty in this post, encourages me to continue my journey of change as well.

it's Good to let God change our hearts.

Even if, the process seems very slow....

If it gets posted in the next couple of days I will be linking up on Ben and Me.

If you were featured (like I was here) you can grab this button for your own blog.  Pretty cool eh?

Homeschooling on the spectrum is Colourful.   I so enjoyed reading this post.  :)   Seriously...she makes it all sound so very do-able and full of love and I just enjoyed it so much.  So go read it, perhaps you'll enjoy it as well.  :)

And for a completely different post here is one called "how low can you go?"    It's a more serious post with a thought provoking topic.  :)

Stop Trying to Balance it all.  Good reminder to focus on what is most important.

There is a current broohaha going on about the change to the sex education curriculum in the public school system.    I hear about in homeschooling circles, RCA circles and just people up in arms (or sometimes not) about it all.   Some are adamantly against it, others don't see the fuss.  These lady wrote what seems a reasonable conversation on it.   You can read it through yourself if you like at this link.

And the last post that I like this month is this one on the Use of Technology by Leah.  How safe is too safe?  And should you get more informed you think?

Five on the Fifth

2/6/2015

I have to admit, it's been a rough month.   So I don't know that I'll have five posts...and they certainly won't be spread out over the month.

Life's just been hard lately but I'm starting to catch my second wind.  A couple more good nights sleep with no bad dreams will do wonders for me I think.  :)

Anyways, today we went skating with our home school group and folks asked how we were doing after the loss of my dad and of course asked how we've been doing with our schooling.   I've been feeling a bit stretched in that regard lately.   Somewhat understandable, but still a reality for me.  So this post resonated with me.    Confessions of a homeschool mom... burnout.   I have to admit, I don't think I could manage the "unschooling" approach in schooling, but sometimes it's tempting to think of it.   To leave the learning to my son's discretion.   I'm too fearful though that he would spend his time just playing minecraft all day long.  :)

Since listening to audio books is something that we enjoy in this household, particularly when we are on the road, finding new books to enjoy is something I keep a watch for.   We've listened to Morris and his Educated Rodents, The Harry Potter series, Tiffany Aichen books, as well as various others.  When I saw this post I thought hmmm... wonder if they will list any that my boy would like as well?  I have to admit, that some on the list look intriguing.  I already have plans to do the Narnia series.

This post on encouraging a love of reading just made me smile.   This is something that my heart so desires for my boy.   He LOVES my reading to him and has a solid interest in a variety of books.  So encouraging a love of reading is something I am keen to do.  :)

And seriously that's all I have this month.  I am so pleased that Marcy puts this blogging event together.   I haven't been participating as faithfully as I want to, but hopefully over this coming month I'll pick out more posts and we'll do this more frequently again.  :)

Five on the fifth, well perhaps the eighth, okay.. the ninth....

Marcy would to have us do five favourite posts on the fifth day every month.  Five posts from the previous month that we enjoyed.   Doesn't matter the type of post, just matters that we liked it.  :)

So here we go.
First up.. Ann Voskamp with this post on happy parents.

Whenever laughter broke through, it reminded me that God was with us.

Jesus tells us that our faith ought to resemble that of little children. I wonder if our laughter ought to resemble theirs too. And I wonder if laughter—holy laughter, laughter that brings us together and emerges out of love—is the soil for faith.

The next post is NOT an easy post.  My niece Ange comes from some hard places in life and she writes an all too real blog.  NOTE: this blog is NOT FOR CHILDREN!   This post made me just want to give her a hug and hold her close and tell her it will come around right in the end.   To be reminded of patience is a good thing no?

I guess what I’m saying is, give yourself, and the people you love, the freedom to be in pain, let them hurt. Give yourself, and others the time they need, to process. Of course it’s important to edify, to speak life and to support someone. But, there’s something to be said, about patient silence. Just sitting with someone.

This post..from Lextin Academy. oh.. it made me shake my head in relief.  :)   There are times that schooling my boy drives me insane, but I only have one lad so it mostly works just fine for us, but there are always "those days" don't you know?  :)

When I walked downstairs to begin lunch I saw that it had been snowing in the kitchen.

Last Friday's Five minute prompt on Leave brought me to this blog with a quickly worded post that was well done.     leave me alone.

I’m not saying that these are bad things, but they can definitely be used as an excuse to just be selfish – to look out for number one rather than for the important people God has placed in my care.

I was looking for the post I commented on about things to do for your pastor and his family and I couldn't find it.  Argh!   BUT I did find this post which gives some ideas and it's good to think on these things.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month! Make some plans as a family to serve your pastor in the next few weeks. It will not only bless your pastor, but will be a great bonding and learning experience for your kids any month of the year!

Five on the 5th - October

5 on the Fifth
Marcy over at Ben and Me has started monthly Five on the Fifth joining together time.   Bloggers getting together to share their five favourite posts over a month.

So what are my five favourite posts?

This has actually proven to be a bit of a challenge.   I've read quite a few good posts and haven't taken the time to save them.  I've pinned a few, but most I just think.. Good read. enjoyed that, sometimes I comment and sometimes I just can't because I'm thinking too much to comment well. :)  (hope that makes sense).  So now's a matter of finding them again.  :)
What posts have I enjoyed this past month and winnowing them down to five.

This post by Michele about how blessed she is by her family.  Posts like this just make my heart smile.   Moms' enjoying and appreciating their families... that's a GOOD thing no?   They cause me to want to write a similar post and I never do as being a copy cat isn't something I want to do as a blogger.  :)

This post by Marcy on being real.     That real need to be balanced in our writing.  To not only talk about what we did do, but sometimes about the things that are hard, or that didn't get accomplished or when life got in the way of other life.   It's hard to find that balancing point and Marcy reminds us to keep trying to find it.

Challies is a blog a read frequently.   He provides much food for thought, and this month Five ways to lose the battle against sin gave me much to think on.     Too often we think we have sin beat and we stop being vigilant... only to be blindsided when it strikes again and obvious (at least to us) manner.   Be vigilant and focused on God.  :)

And then there's Tara telling us thebald facts about homeschooling her daughter.  Wow.. that could be me talking of schooling with my boy.  :)   Some days are just downright tough, but those tough days are hidden the midst of good days with smiles and learning and excitement.

Hhmm.. what shall i do for five?  I"m going to see if I can find one that I pinned.  :)    Ah... here's the one I want.
The anatomy of a meltdown.  I worked with special needs folks of various ages for about 15 years.  It was a challenging job but I learned much about myself and about the people I served.   Sometimes you just need to let children be angry and keep them safe and let them wear themselves out.   It's a hard thing, and in the teenage years can be a downright scary thing as you keep them safe as well as yourself.   My heart goes out to parents who need to deal with these struggles as it's not an easy road to hoe.
