My son is technically still in Grade Two, but I wasn't too concerned about him doing this grade three curriculum.  Every grade three book I've EVER looked at starts a good portion of the year reviewing Grade Two materials, so I figured that it would give us a good taste of what this program could do for us.

The Light Blue Series is a complete math curriculum, student manual (includes teaching sections) tests, reviews, worksheet maker and BONUS.... CANADIAN materials as well.  (how cool is that!).

How we Used It.

I received a downloadable PDF.  So I would print off a couple sheets,  then we'd do them.  The instruction is right there on the worksheet.  It's nicely marked off in a blue box.    Just two sheets everyday.  Didn't matter how long it took to do them, didn't matter how big the teachers box was, we did two pages most every day.  Some days we'd repeat a lesson just to help teach a concept that was new.     5 minutes or an hour.. just two sheets.    It never took us an hour (just so you know).  Normally about 1/2 an hour.   We'd talk about them.  We'd figure out what was expected.  The lad would attempt them (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) and then we'd talk some more and work together on one or two problems and then he'd work on his own.  This got us through.

And two pages... that's doable in the eyes of my boy.

I really like that I can print off just exactly what I need so he doesn't get intimidated.  (full visual workbooks tend to do that to him).

We haven't had a need to use the Canadian money yet, but I appreciate that they are added.    We also didn't use the geometric cutouts since we have a whole set of geometric shapes already.

What We Liked

My son: It's just two pages Mom, and it shows me what to do.   I can do it if I really want to but sometimes it's too complicated.

Me: No pictures and no frills to distract.   I find that cutesy graphics just distract the lad and he focuses on that rather than on the work he needs to do.   Clear examples, though my son finds ways to do it his own way... especially at the beginning when she's going through the tricks of how to do math easier.
BUT MOM, says the lad, I can do that by doing it THIS way.   (the same way, just backwards).  :)   So he was up for that challenge.  :)

The lessons are short.
You can make practice as long or as short as needed.

What we didn't like

I can't think of anything off hand that I didn't like.  The program worked well for the lad.
His only complaint was "Book work AGAIN?.... Can't we do something funner?"  Or "can we play more games mom?"  (I liked that the links to on-line math games were included).

My Opinion

This is a solid math program.  I've oft been intrigued by Math Mammoth and have gotten their freebies in the past.  Having had a chance to review their math program was a yahoo in my eyes.   And now that I have actually WORKED WITH the program I can definitely say ... this is a good program and well worth spending your hard-earned dollars on.

Other News on the Homeschool Front

5/29/2013

Picture
I have to admit, for the past two weeks we haven't done alot of formal homeschooling, but learning has been accomplished, just not the formal kind.

The lad has worked on his keyboard... Children's Music Journey practicing through Adventus.

He's done some practical math via cooking/baking.  Mom.. I want these candies.  Sure as long as you can tell me what 1/3 of that is.  ACK!!!   But he worked it out...and got that immediate reward.

We've done nature walks looking for toad/frog spawn.   It's been unsuccessful but we've seen lots of bugs and had fun exploring small waterways and learning about drainage ditches and catch basins.

We done some horticultural work as well.  Planting gardens, going to the gardening centre and figuring out what flowers might go well with others.  Learning how to do approximations using your body to figure out how high something might grow.   Learning how to scare squirrels out the garden using plastic snakes.   WHICH DOES work as long as you move the snakes around periodically.  :)

He's sold vegetable plants: needing to do math, good communication, customer service, math (adding up what is owed, figuring out how much he needs to have to buy the produce desired),  dealing with store clerks, and generally practicing all those niceties that produce good customer service.

Yesterday he went to an extension program at the University of Western Ontario where he built a lego robot with a team of boys.  They had a battle and I'm told it was good.   We won two and lost two.  The worst part of it was they had to disassemble the robot when the day was done.    It was a good 4.5 hour time of education for him.

Oh... we did play the birdcage press card game a few times.  :)  And we also played The Dangerous book for boys game more than once.   And we've

Watching Life In Our Household

5/29/2013

As some folks know, we have critters.

I raise rabbits and guinea pigs.   My son has discovered the joy that is mice.
Picture
Our three girls: Nick, Skitter and Baby have had a whack of baby mice.   They are starting to grow in their fur and develop their colour.  Most look to be a chestnut or beige colour, but we have some whites as well and are hoping some of the darker ones will be male.   Astonishing to us in the fact that none of them appear to be bi-coloured.
Picture
As you can see we have chestnut, hoping for black, beige and white.  At this point these are the four colours that we see.   The lad is hopeful that we can sell most as pets for $1 each, or even perhaps to a pet store for 30-50 cents each.  Time will tell.  :)  He has been fascinated watching them grow and learning how to handle them from an early age.
Picture
We have four toads that we know of that dwell in our backyard.  Barricade, Toad, Six and Fatty.   This is Toad.   The lad has been drawing pictures of them as their spots are different.   Toad was rediscovered this morning hopping through the wet grass.  He's now ensconced in our toad habitat with Barricade (as he's big enough not to get eaten).   I saw Six the other day and I haven't see Fatty for a while so hopefully he's still alive.    Toad would not hold still for the drawing of himself (excellent art by the way) so the lad asked if I could help him take a picture of him.  So I give you Toad.  :)

Map and Flap

5/22/2013

This past Tuesday (21) Fanshawe Conservation Area hosted a workshop for children up to grade three called Map and Flap.  It was a junior orienteering course.    Our fearless leader is Pat.
Picture
The children had a great deal of fun.  Oh my.  :)   They formed into groups of 3-5 and then needed to follow a map and pretend to be monarch butterflies on the way to Mexico.  We were given 45 minutes to complete the task.   The lad, formed a group with two other boys.
Picture
They started out at point "A" with all the other children.   They could make a choice as to where they went next.    Each group made a different choice.   They needed to look for poles with a butterfly on them, then they needed to read the back and follow the directions.   Sometime they had options to follow, and other times it was a direction to a new point.
Picture
Our team made it to Mexico!   We ran back and forth, at one point we died and had to start over again.  We ran from one side of the park to the other.  To be honest...the boys ran and I walked and they waited.  I DO NOT RUN.   Hubby helped.  For a while he walked with me, and then he walked with the boys.   I listened closely and when I heard...oh we had to go to "O" next, I'd merely start walking in that direction.   This of course, helped the boys to orient themselves a bit more quickly.  :)  It was rather hot and humid and the boys started to wilt after a while but VERY determined to make it to Mexico.

As soon as we made it to Mexico we went back to the start to sit in the shade.
Picture
Once all the groups were back, and well rested ....unfortunately not everyone made it to Mexico, we played a rose compass game.   The children stood on different points of the compass and needed to do an action when their point was read in a story.   The children had fun with this, in particular my son.   He acted out the different stages of the monarch butterfly.  :)  He's such a ham.   Three caterpillars below.  :)  They also did chrysallis and adult butterfly.
Picture
The program was supposed to last until 330 but at 320 we got caught in a thunderstorm.  Fanshawe has a fast rule that no programs take place during thunderstorms so we called it a day.  It was a good day and I'd have no problems doing workshops at Fanshawe another time.   Kai and Aid

The building of a Toad Habitat

5/22/2013

My son has been busy building a toad habitat.   He's built it but then the toads kept escaping.   We added some netting, the toads remain!!!!
Picture
Things the lad has learned about toads
1. All their spots are different
2. Toads are better climbers than one would think
3. Toads are most easily found after it rains
4. Toads like bugs and worms, but he's never seen a toad eat anything
5. Toads PEE alot mom!  LOOK!
6. Toads are very good at hiding.
7. Toad poop is rather icky.
8. Toads are very good at hopping.
9. If toads escape they can land up very far from where you left them.  (aka Fatty was found way on the opposite side of our rather nice sized backyard).
10.  Bigger toads have a noticeable flap of skin on their legs that really impressed the lad.
11. Netting is necessary to keep toads in a habitat, otherwise they keep leaving.  We lost three smaller toads: Toad, Six and Fatty.  So far Barricade has not learned how to escape.

KICK event - Pinery Nature Walk

5/20/2013

On May 17, 2013 our homeschool group KICK  got together at the Pinery for a walk with a naturalist.   I took some quick notes using EVERNOTE, just very quick ones as I didn't want to be noisy and interrupt Allison the naturalist.
Picture
yarrow is a cure for poison ivy
poison ivy is related to sumac, cashews and something else.
Picture
poison ivy. look for three leaves, middle one on longer stem. Can be vine or bush, tall or short.
birds are defending territory or wanting to invite girls to come on over.
most female birds are drab.  not so with robins.

there are no bull frogs left in Pinery Provincial Park
They were over hunted.

The naturalist did a good job of imitating the sounds of different frogs.

We did manage to see some turtles sunning on a log though. :)

children learned about biodiversity.   hummingbirds will lick up sap left by yellow sapsuckers.    that's a type of woodpecker.   flying squirrels and screech owls also depend on wood peckers.

The Children very much enjoyed their time together.  Afterwards we went to area 9 for a picnic lunch and some time on the beach.  :)   Good time had by all.

Review: Joyce Herzog, Scaredy Cat Reading System 2

5/18/2013

 photo joyceherzog_zps3c5942dd.jpg
My Son is reading better..... that's what I can say this program did for him.  He is reading better.   Reading is making more sense to him (and it's easier for me to explain) why vowels change how they sound (they were such a source of angst earlier).     So this program gets two thumbs up in this review.  :)

Vendor and Product Details

Vendor: Joyce Herzog
Product: Scaredy Cat Reading System Level 2
Pricing Information: Complete Package is $75.
Age Range: There is a pre-test on the site which helps you to learn which level is best for your child.    You can find that on the Downloads Page.

The Scaredy Cat Reading System is designed to help beginning reading well...read.  :)   The placement test helps you to pick out the level best suited.

It comes with a CD, a book with the CD, a teachers manual, games, die, flashcards (The flashcards came on thick cardstock reading for cutting) and a student manual.     The level we chose was reading level two, it seemed to be the best fit.
Picture

How we Used it

When we got the materials I looked through it and thought, okay, this looks intimidating.  I've never used a curriculum to teach reading so hadn't been too sure what to expect.   Looking through it, my thoughts were ACK, I can't do this, but as I delved into the materials my thoughts changed to oh....this will be a highly adaptable system.  I can do this.   This will fit with how we learn.  :)

So I read through the teachers manual and got the basic gist of the program.   Found some typos which bothered me.  I will need to make a list and point them out to the author.

Then we dove in.

The lad had FUN playing the games.  Imagine that.  My lad having fun playing a word game.    The games have low pressure, he could use his angry birds as players and they could be teaching each other how to say words.. it was ALL good.   He learned!  :)  No tears!  :)

The lessons are LARGE I found.  We've been using the first lesson now for quite some time and still aren't through it.  Mind, I'm a one page a day gal as that works well for my lad when doing a formal type of curriculum....and we go back to pages and read them again, try it again, can you do it better?   Do you understand the mirror concept...ooh...let's play an actual mirror game to reinforce this idea.   We are taking our time as stressing over reading is not where it's at.   But as we use it...he learns!

The word flash cards, these are working well for us.  The lad scatters them, groups them by whatever method seems best to him (and it's not always the same way with the same group of words), picks a set or two to practice reading from.    Sometimes we toss angry birds at them when they are scattered and the lad helps them learn to read the word (sometimes getting mom to step in when he has no clue).

This system works for us at a pace best suited to our household.   I love the flexibility of it.
Picture

My son's reaction

I find it interesting how much he enjoys reading a list of words and seeing if he can read them faster.   He loves it.  He's gotten down from reading with with help (3.20) to reading it by himself me assisting slightly (4:20) to reading it completely on his down (320) and now he can read this list of words in 2 minutes 20 seconds.  He's impressing himself.  "Mom!  I'm getting it!"  :)

He still is quite concerned that he's not reading as fluidly as mom or dad are, but he's starting to see how he is getting better at reading.   This confidence I attribute to the practice that he is getting reading the same words over and over again and being able to see (as we write down the time) how he really is getting better and faster at it.

Gramma's reaction

"He's reading with me... oh.. I'm just so delighted!    He's willing to read with me".  :)

Toad's Reaction

Picture
Have to admit, I don't think toad really had an impression, but he did seem quite content. :)

My reaction and recommendation

I like this program.  I will continue to use it.  My recommendation is, if you have the ability to make a program suit your needs, this reading program will work for you quite nicely.   If you have a child who stresses over reading the ability to go slowly with this program will make it an excellent fit.  My son enjoys it, though every new page is greeted with "mom... I can't do this"..... with encouragement and experience he is learning that he too, can do this and it's not something to worry on.  :)    See all those checks?   Those are words that he knows and is for the most part very confident in reading.   Though I have to admit... those D's sometimes like to fool him into thinking that they are B's.

He's reading better!   That quite frankly says it all to me!

Concerns

Typos, I dislike typos since to me it shows a lack of attention to detail.  I have no issues forgiving one or two....but when it's a recurrent theme it's like hmmm... something is not quite right here, it just raises my level of concern.

Magnetic letters: I should have received these (according to the website they were part of the package) but I didn't.   So I can't comment on them.  Not sure what happened with that.

If getting this product shipped to Canada do specify HOW you want it shipped.  UPS will charge a shipping/duty fee, USPS does not.

Recipes made using Rhubarb

5/16/2013

Yesterday the lad and I picked rhubarb.  Our patch has really grown over the past two years, I"m starting to wonder if I need to start gifting bits and pieces of it soon.  But for now it works for us.

BUT since we had a fair bit I wanted to do more than make rhubarb sauce so we looked for recipes.

I came across my old stand-by of rhubarb Crisp.  But I also found a recipe for Rhubarb cake.  My goodness....I should have found this recipe AGES ago.  It's just lovely. :)

Directions for Rhubarb crisp

Preheat oven to 350

Have pie plate, fill with diced rhubarb, top with 1/4-1/2 cup sugar depending on size of pie plate and your sweetness preferences.

mix together the following:
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/4 c butter
1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder

put this mixture on top the rhubarb.

Bake for about 30 minutes.  Might take a tad longer depending on your oven.

Directions for Rhubarb Cake

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Stir together
1 1/4 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour

Add in
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup sour cream
(we used greek yogurt)

Once it is nice and smooth add in
3 cups diced rhubarb

In separate bowl mix together
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Sprinkle the mixture on top of the cake then dust lightly with ground cinnamon.

Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes.
I would have pictures for you but I can't seem to locate my camera.  I'm sure I took it with me to soccer today, but on the way there it wasn't in my pocket.  SO... I'm a bit preplexed as to where it could have gotten to.

The Dangerous Book for Boys

5/16/2013

Picture
I received this book from a friend Tuesday.  The lad loves it.  He finds it interesting, challenging, and just plain fun.  Some of it is too hard for him yet, but when you play with two people you can help each other out.

But it has challenges: who can build a paper hat the fastest, which planet is farthest from the sun, and such like.   It's a wonderful homeschooling game as it covers so many different areas AND if we don't know the answer, we can go look it up and it's all in fun.   I am very thankful for my friend gifting this game to us.  I expect we'll enjoy it for a good while yet.
