Archery Lessons

The day was a tad rainy and a touch cold but that didn't dampen the spirits of 11girls and boys and assorted parents as we headed out the Circle R Ranch to do some archery.   The littles went to learn about sheep, and the olders off to harken back to the days of old.  :)

Below is our intrepid instructor.   She was a soft-spoken lady who needed to polish her teaching skills a bit (but don't we all?)... and the children learned.  We soon discovered she excelled at one to one teaching... as the slower quieter children blossomed under her watchful hands-on approach.

Four people could shoot at a time, so we had two groups of four children, and one group of three children, giving us adults a chance to try our hands at it.   It was so fun watching the children improve each time they shot.

The children learned the different parts of the arrow.   They learned why one feather is a different colour.  It shows which way the arrow should face.   The odd coloured one should be facing away from the bow (out to the side my son says).  By doing so you keep your fletching from robbing off on the bow.

The children learned to hold the bow on a bit of a angle to help hold the shaft of the arrow onto the grip of the bow.    The proper direction to hold a bow and arrow (at target or at the ground).   The children all listened well and followed through on instruction received...though hunting for arrows shot was frequently a task many tried to avoid.  :)

We learned to pull the bow back until your thumb hit your cheek and to keep your elbow level and up.    To stand sideways to the target with your feet shoulder width apart.   Put your fingers in the shape of a "v" and then to place the tips on either side of the nock on the bow string.   Bow arm out straight and pull back to a consistent depth to your cheek.

If all goes well, then success is to be had!

KICK event - Pinery Nature Walk

5/20/2013

On May 17, 2013 our homeschool group KICK  got together at the Pinery for a walk with a naturalist.   I took some quick notes using EVERNOTE, just very quick ones as I didn't want to be noisy and interrupt Allison the naturalist.

yarrow is a cure for poison ivy
poison ivy is related to sumac, cashews and something else.
Picture
poison ivy. look for three leaves, middle one on longer stem. Can be vine or bush, tall or short.
birds are defending territory or wanting to invite girls to come on over.
most female birds are drab.  not so with robins.

there are no bull frogs left in Pinery Provincial Park
They were over hunted.

The naturalist did a good job of imitating the sounds of different frogs.

We did manage to see some turtles sunning on a log though. :)

children learned about biodiversity.   hummingbirds will lick up sap left by yellow sapsuckers.    that's a type of woodpecker.   flying squirrels and screech owls also depend on wood peckers.

The Children very much enjoyed their time together.  Afterwards we went to area 9 for a picnic lunch and some time on the beach.  :)   Good time had by all.

HOPE and KICK

9/21/2012

This morning the lad and I attended week two of the HOPE days fall session.   I taught storytelling, and helped with two separate classes.   The lad partook of Ancient Rome, phys ed and some other class that I can't recall what it is.  He is enjoying both classes.  He apparently is doing a good job of talking their ears off though. :)

After connecting with one of the mom's about an issue, we moved quickly home, where the lad and I prepared for KICK to come over.  KICK is the London Homeschool group that I am also part of.    They were coming over to learn about rabbits and guinea pigs.

We had a good time.

I had set up a couple different displays... one with different foods good for bunnies, one with different types of cages, and another with livestock items.

I did some mini demonstrations for nail cutting, grooming and what not.  Talked about how to handle baby rabbits and how to treat teenage bunnies.

We then played a rousing game of rabbit agility.   I heard LOTS of giggles, had some good questions asked, and the children enjoyed themselves.

A good day all told.
