Water: in Oceans and the water cycle

6/30/2015

My son and I have spent that last couple of months working our way through this book one page at a time.   Learning different facts about the oceans... from the animals dwelling therein, to the different levels, to the ships crossing them, and even to the dangers currently facing our oceans.    We been amazed, stunned, shocked, and horrified at the different points throughout this book.  It's been a good read for us.

My lad has asked copious amounts of questions and we've taken plenty of detours into the world of "google" as we searched out answers to his questions.

We learned about different boats and took the time to look them up.  Chinese junks, tirenes, and more
We looked up some of the different submersibles in use to study the oceans.
We were amazed at the different sharks in the ocean like this hammerhead.

I have to admit to being bothered by the evolutionary push in the book as well as the insistence on global warming being a fact.    I found myself skipping past a few pages that talked exclusively about such topics.   Both are theories and I wish they'd be treated as such, instead of as accepted fact.   But take away that, and boy, we learned a ton and had fun while doing so.   It's cool to follow new thoughts and ideas, and do outside learning on our own.  :)

We did some more learning about water as well.   I recently received this book from Raincoast books.   It's called Water is Water and is written by Miranda Paul.   What a delightful book!   It taught my boy that there is more to the water cycle than...

Water is Water: A book about the water cycle is a great book.  The illustrations by Jason Chin add so much depth and interest to the story line.  My son had fun looking for an animal in every picture.    Sometimes the animal followed from page to page, and sometimes they added a new animal...what could it be and what would the water be doing next?   It was SO well done.  :)

Loved doing this book for a review.  :)  It's a short book with simple language, about 40 pages long suitable for children 6-9.   My son and I took turns reading pages in it, and just thinking about the different forms that water can take.     At the of the book we learn that a cat is 80% water, and other pertinent facts about water and the water cycle.    Nicely informative in a way that will speak into the lives of children and the precious resource that water is.

Some resources that may further your learning about water.  :)
Free Lapbook on the water cycle.
Free Water cycle notebook.
Worksheets onthe Ocean.

Give Yourself to the Rain

6/29/2015

One of the things I like to do with my boy is read poetry.

About six weeks ago we went to a book sale and I went from table to table looking for books on poetry suitable for my lad.   NO ONE had any.   I was devastated!   It's hard to find books with poetry at yard sales.

Finally one of the vendors rifled through her books and came up with this one.  Give yourself to the Rain - poems for the very young.
Picture
This book is written by Margaret Wise Brown.   She says "to write well for children one must love the things that children love".   And so she writes on the things that children do indeed love.

The last poem of the book, my son said "that was a good poem mom, I liked that one".

So allow me to share it with you.
Good-bye Little Bunny Good-bye.

Good-bye Little Bunny Good-bye
You'll be a rabbit soon
And no one can catch you
Running away
Under the changing moon
Too soon.
Good-bye little bunny good-bye
you'll be a rabbit
Soon

There were several other poems in the book that he liked as well, one even inspired him to make up his own short poem (which I am NOT allowed to share with you).    I can't say that I appreciated them all, but that's how it is with poetry (just like with art).  You can't like everything all the time.  But the poems entertained, inspired and taught my lad and that's exactly what I wanted.  :)

Do you read poetry with your children?   If so, what books have intrigued them?   What author do you recommend?

Missionary Monday: Juan Leones

6/29/2015

Picture
Howard Widdoes was a missionary in a small Christian Mission in Bawang.      He had a small congregation that regularly sang worship songs.  This drew the attention of a wealthy, well employed young man named Juan Leones.  The music drew him in, the teaching encouraged him, and so he became a believer.   After being baptized in a rushing river Juan eagerly told his family is his new found faith.

This cost him his family as his father tossed him out.   His fiancee broke off their engagement.    He went to his pastor friend and said "for the sake of Christ, I have lost my inheritance, my parents, and the girl I love.   Since I have paid so much for my faith, i want it to be worth all it cost.  I have decided to resign from the government service and to enter the ministry right away."

He ended up going among the Igorots... a fierce mountain people who fought and killed their way through life.   Living among these fierce people for two years changed them completely, leading most of the people to Christ and from there Juan asked for a new mission.  He wanted to work among the Kalingas as well... head-hunters and a fierce people that only groups of soldiers would approach.

He took his wife Lucia and so another group of Filipinos was changed.

The faith of one man changed two groups of people for the sake of the Lord.

Photography Bundle Sale!   Ends Today!!!!

6/29/2015

One of the thoughts that creeps into my mind frequently is, “Why couldn’t I capture that moment in time perfectly?” That beautiful sunset witnessed on a perfect vacation. My child’s first belly laugh. The expression of joy on my father’s face at his surprise party. I don’t want to forget any of it.

It’s SO important to savor it all… to relish those moments. But you know what’s equally important, if you ask me? To be able to look back and relish those moments all over again. A month from now. A year from now. Fifty years from now.

And that’s where photographs come in. These days, it’s so easy to get snap-happy at a moment’s notice: we just reach into our purses for our smartphones or miniscule cameras and start clicking away at anything and everything.

The problem is… it’s so easy for those photos to come out badly! You think you’ve taken a wonderful picture of your beautiful boy standing by himself for the first time, but actually you’ve managed to capture the moment when he falls down and starts wailing! You think you’ve snapped a stunning image of a horse galloping along the beach, but actually it’s just a dark blob against an overexposed background. You think you’ve achieved the perfect shot of your wonderful parents laughing together on their anniversary, but you take a look and you’ve managed to capture… a blur.

If you can relate, I have good news for you! My friends Ryan and Steph at Ultimate Bundles have put together an incredible product to help with your photography woes. It’s called The Ultimate Digital Photography Bundle (Beginner’s Edition), and it contains a curated collection of ebooks and video training guides to help you become a better photographer.

All the resources have been provided by professional, world-renowned photographers who are experts in teaching others – even complete beginners. You won’t need to switch up to a more expensive camera to make full use of the bundle (even if you just use your iPhone for photographs), and you don’t need to neglect your family for weeks upon weeks of training! You can learn everything in little chunks – whenever you have a spare moment.

Click here to see the full range of ebooks and training courses included in The Ultimate Photography Bundle (Beginner’s Edition).

There’s even better news! Everything in the bundle has a combined total value of $555, but for this week only, The Ultimate Bundles Team is selling the entire bundle for just $37 – a discount of more than 90%! What’s more, they’re also throwing in a FREE copy of FX Photo Studio Pro software from MacPhun (which provides stunning filters and photography effects) worth $29.99!

Click here to buy The Ultimate Digital Photography Bundle (Beginner’s Edition) for just $37.

No blurriness, no exposure nightmares, no bad angles. Just perfect, happy memories!

It's frustrating you know... when you take decent pictures but just want to take pictures that snap... or even just take less of the frustrating ones. You know, the ones that are okay, but don't really make you go "ah".

And I completely understand the frustration! There are so many “photography for beginners” products out there, but when you have the basics down and can take a great snapshot most of the time, you don’t need to be taught what the novices need to know – right? You already have those nailed! What you need instead are the resources that will help you take things to the next level. You want to take photos that make people’s jaws drop. Heck, you want to take photos that make your jaw drop!

If what I’m describing sounds like you, read on! Because I’m so excited to tell you about a fantastic new product that I think you’ll love.

It’s called The Ultimate Digital Photography Bundle (Intermediate Edition), and it’s a collection of ebooks, video training courses and software specifically for intermediate photographers (as you may have guessed from the name!) just like you. It’s been curated by my good friends Ryan and Steph over at Ultimate Bundles, and everything inside it has been provided by professional, world-renowned photographers who are experts in teaching others.

Review: Shadow of the Mountain - Exodus

6/28/2015

Picture
I have to admit to some trepidation as I started reading Cliff Graham's "Shadow of the Mountain".   It's a fictional work based on the life of Caleb.   This is the first book in Graham's Old Testament series called Exodus.   The author was open about the fact that he took liberties with the story, not a whole lot is known about Caleb.

But I have to tell you this, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.  I did!   It brought the Old Testament stories to life, helping me to understand the real threat of bandits, understanding the rivalries between peoples, and the need to trust God.   Realistic battle scenes mixed with vulnerability not only of a physical nature but also of an emotional ones.

I had a hard time in some areas of the book with the severity of Caleb's reactions to discipline within the Israelite camp, but I understand how he came to the way of being based on the life that was described in the book.

Wow... interesting life Caleb led.   And through the life and beliefs of the Egyptian people came to life.    Seeing the hardness of Pharoah's heart.   How the plagues hit into the very hearts and lives of the people and their religious beliefs.

God's hand in play even when he didn't know it.
Strength and discipline, and later a learned dependance on God.
God's hand firmly on Caleb's life.

Interesting book, and yeah, you should read it if you get a chance.  :)

Five Minute Friday Post : Dream

6/28/2015

I have to admit, this post is a couple of days late, but what with having a busy weekend, one does what one can when one has the time right?    :)

This Five Minute Friday post is inspired by the word prompt posted by Kate.    This week the word given is DREAM.

The rules for the posts are simple.  Write for five minutes.  Link up.  Then be an encouragement to the person linking up before you and comment on their post.  Easy enough eh?   The hardest part sometimes is thinking of something to write about concerning the word prompt...but taking time to think is a good thing no?  :)
Picture
Dream.
One of my son's favourite questions first thing in the morning is "Mom, did you have any interesting dreams last night?".    This of course, is a precursor to my asking him if HE had any interesting dreams...at which point I get told about his interesting dreams.   He's used to the fact that I rarely have interesting dreams (which he finds terribly boring).

But dreams are what all people have don't you find?
Whether they are dreams during our sleep, or dreams we have for the future, or dreams that dwell on our past.    Dreams happen because we are people living on this world.

I dream about having a farm and not being limited in the amount of bunnies that I can raise.  :)    I dream about having my business that makes enough to pay all our bills.   I dream about my lad growing up to become a fine man of God.   That dream matters by the by as it affects my present course of action with him.   The rest are just dreams and are limited by present realities.

But some dreams can be worked for you know?
I can teach my boy to simply read the bible and to ask questions based on what he reads.
I can have a small business now which may or may not blossom into bigger business.
I can look at pictures of farms with my hubby and think of possibilities down the road...knowing that our future is at this point, limited by his job prospects.

And you know what.... it's all GOOD. Whether some dreams are accomplished or not matters not.   If the important dreams are met... of my lad loving God thoroughly... it's all good in my world.   If my hubby finds the right job when this current one fades.... that matters.   My other dreams are just hopes and longings and God fulfills my life regardless and it is GOOD.

What dreams are most important to you????

Step up your ability to take GOOD pictures

6/25/2015

There’s one type of email I receive over and over. It’s from people who want to “level up” their photography skills but can’t find the right products to help. They don’t want to become professional photographers or dedicate their lives to photography, but they do want to create the sort of images that are a big step up from “amateur”.

Making some flower gardens

6/25/2015

Picture
This spring I have been making some new gardens about the place.   The lad has been helping me off and on throughout the process.   We started off with making this simple hoop garden.   We just took some wire paneling used to reinforce cement and looped it over one of the veggie gardens.   There I started some lettuces, dandelions and what not I use to feed the bunnies and occasionally us.  :)    It worked well.   I've repurposed it this summer as a climbing rack for my peas as well.  (Just moved it to stand up on end in one cormer of another garden).
Picture
Where we had our hanging tomatoes last year I put in perennial bed.   This started with going to Costco on a day they had their barn board for sale.    (woot woot... as I didn't realize that until I arrived there).     We took two 10 foot pieces, cut a bit less than two feet off the ends and screwed them together.  We then added the best lawn mowers ever created....guinea pigs!     We divided the garden in half and put the guinea pigs (we have four) in each section for 12 hours.   When we came back the grass was very short and lining the bottom with a thick layer of newspaper was extremely easy.
Picture
Stage three was added in compost (mostly rabbit manure) and a layer of dirt.   My son watered the compost really well as I had some hay/straw mixed in with the rabbit manure.   He did an excellent job of compacting it down really well.    We layered the top with dirt and then started to grab the perennials out of their holding area in the veggie gardens.
Picture
I have since added more plants and will need to post a current picture.   It's been a bit of fun going to the different nurseries and finding a variety of plants to go into this new garden AND... I made a couple of box planters for the front patio as well.  I put a box planter on either side of our walk way.   Check it out:
Picture
Picture
I also moved our big planter up on to the corner of the patio and added our household plants (which needed repotting) into it ...this way I only have one big pot to water, and added some other plants just to fill it in a bit.
Picture
I've probably spent too much at the nurseries this year, but good news is I won't have to spend it next year.    I love buying perennials and rarely put in annuals (though I did buy a few this year).    For my son and his toad garden I picked up a bunch of scotch and irish moss.   We also picked up a variety of ground creeper plants and a couple of quick blooming annuals to encourage flies and what not to come.
Picture
His toads are SO happy.  It's fun to come out in the morning and see the toads snuggled up in the moss (you can't see me they seem to be saying).   My son is delighted and I often find him outside hanging out around just watching them.   We've learned they aren't the best at catching mosquitos but with flies they excell.  :)
Picture
plants need to grow, but this is what I finished with. :)

Review: SmartKidz Media

6/23/2015

I have to tell you, this is a neat site...SmartKidz Media.   We have had so much fun exploring it over the past few weeks.   Child Safe videos and learning environment, and an excellent supplement to learning.   I NEED to tell you about SmartKidz Media Library for Homeschoolers.
Picture
So just what is SmartKidz Media?   It's a online streaming media library where children over 13 can go and browse to their hearts content, where parents need not worry about what they might be watching.  It is also a place where parents can take their younger children and pick and choose together what they might want to watch.   My son was nine, and after I looked through the site I allowed him to watch whatever he wanted.

He gravitated to the animal videos.. thoroughly enjoying the animal soap operas, animal journeys, magic of nature and so much more.   It was good to hear those chortles of delight and gasps of wonder.  "MOM!   Did you know _______".    When he was able to connect the dots between one video and another it was a wonder to him.  :)
Picture
large pictures help one find what one is looking for easily and the captions that pop up give a good preview as to what each video is about.
I have to admit that I did draw him away from only watching the animal videos though.   I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the classics and some they had combined with images from artists of old and my son would watch the images while ignoring the music.  "I liked those cowboy pictures mom".
"What did you think of the music"?
"I would have liked you to shut the noise off, but you liked it so I didn't say anything".  (sorry SmartKidz.... my lad just isn't that cultured I guess).  :)    He did enjoy the jazz collection though.  And the ancient cultures was a hit!   I often heard comments of "that's interesting mom", "why do you think they did that", "people are very different aren't they mom"?    I so loved hearing that.  :)      It was so much an enjoyment for both of us to watch these videos that taught us so much.

Fridays was very much our "let's watch smartkidz day".  Not saying that we didn't watch it other times throughout the week...but that was generally the lad saying "can we watch an animal video?"   On Fridays I would sit down and say "let's look at this, or have you see this yet?".   Since it was part of our homeschooling day it was easy to push in those learning videos such as this math one.
Picture
There are several math, science and other videos to teach basic concepts.

SmartKidz Media has so much to offer.
Two Main Sections

Photography Class

6/23/2015

This spring I was privileged to help out in our Co-op groups photography class.   It was fun to work with the students who really wanted to learn how to take some better pictures.

We learned about such things as
- the rule of thirds
- leaving room for the picture to move
- watching the details

and more.

It was interesting and helped me to think about how maybe I could take better pictures.
A bit of learning and voila... better pictures happen!   Neat how the works eh?  :)

Let me then introduce to you some help that YOU can get for taking better pictures.   So that like me your pictures will be in focus, on target, showing room to move and be aesthetically pleasing.  :)
