Why on earth would someone use the kitchen as a place to do school?
How would someone use the kitchen to do school?
Well, because in the kitchen, you can do math, language arts, history, social studies, science and whatever else you can throw into the mix.
An example

So now my picky with food lad has another item of food that he'll willingly eat (as long as we do it mom's way) and I have a lad who learned that sometimes recipes need to be tweaked.
Geography and Social Studies within a Unit Study
We started with just understanding the world, and have moved on to studying the first nations people. Within that study we are making some of the foods of the first nations people.

By studying the First Nations people the lad is learning geography and when we do cook, he needs to figure out where on the map this food is an example of.
So far this a good thing, though I must admit....we are both a little leery of trying fish soup! I'll report back. :)
