How would someone use the kitchen to do school?
Well, because in the kitchen, you can do math, language arts, history, social studies, science and whatever else you can throw into the mix.

An example
In the picture above my lad is learning to make French Toast. We got the recipe out of a book which is easier for him to read (language arts). It was a recipe I was unfamiliar with BUT did things differently then how I grew up. This was the important part. This recipe called for dipping the bread in the egg/milk mixture and then frying it directly in some fat/grease/butter whatever was available. When I grew up I learned to first butter the bread and then dip it. I explained that to my lad (history/social studies) so he wanted to experiment with which way was better (science) so we each had two slices of french toast. One for each way of doing it. We flavoured them ..one half of each piece with cinnamon toast and one half with maple syrup.
The winner... the way Mom was raised with making Friench toast sweetened with cinnamon sugar.
So now my picky with food lad has another item of food that he'll willingly eat (as long as we do it mom's way) and I have a lad who learned that sometimes recipes need to be tweaked.

Geography and Social Studies within a Unit Study
This year we are studying Canada as a major part of our course of study, this will be a least a year, probably more study for us.
We started with just understanding the world, and have moved on to studying the first nations people. Within that study we are making some of the foods of the first nations people.

Indian Bread from the Eastern Woodlands People
Tonight we hope to make fish soup! :) Which was a staple of the Coastal peoples. The Inuit ate a lot of fish as well BUT I won't do raw food which the Inuit did a lot of due to having no fuel by which to cook, so we'll have the next best thing...Fish COOKED. :)
By studying the First Nations people the lad is learning geography and when we do cook, he needs to figure out where on the map this food is an example of.
So far this a good thing, though I must admit....we are both a little leery of trying fish soup! I'll report back. :)
