Review and Giveaway:  Can't-Wait Willow!

5/1/2013

Today i am reviewing a book called Can't Wait Willow!  I am doing this review on behalf of FlyBy Promotions.

This is a children's book published by Ideal books, it is part of the series called Shine Bright Kids.  For a preview you can go here.
About Shine Bright Kids:The Shine Bright Kids series provides children and their families with a relevant framework to help instill solid values and teach the importance of making good choices. The principles that will be explored include: using good judgment, taking responsibility, having a positive attitude, and demonstrating perseverance.
Picture
This book is about a young girl who needs to make a decisions on the way to the circus.   She has a star that accompanies her and helps to show if she's making good or bad decisions.

The author's website has great resources to support the book, including a printable poster with 'Ways to Shine Bright,' as well as reward chart you can use at home with your children.  If you go here there are "go alongs" for the book, activities to encourage children to continue using the lesson taught in the book.

My son's reaction

My son is age seven.   He was really ho-hum about this book.   "It was okay mom".   When I went to read it to him the next night "BUT MOM... we read that last night, do we have to read it again?"    We'll be putting it into our "to be given as a gift box" as it really is a nice book, but the lad is not into it at all.

My reaction

If you have a youngster that struggles with making good decisions, this book is a good way to encourage dialogue between you and your child.  This book is an aid to figure out why some decisions can be good, but really not good at the time.   Why some decisions simply might not be good when you look at what your goal is.    This book can help you make conversation with your child in a non-confrontational manner.  It also overall is just a good story.

Today I am doing a review for FlyBy Promotions.
They sent me a book called " Hey God, I've God Some Guy Named Jonah in my Stomach and I think I'm Going to Throw up!"
This is a children's book.

You can find the book at  this website.
Troy Schmidt, the author, can be found on facebook or twitter (@troyeschmidt).     Troy Schmidt has writing and video production credits ranging from assignments with Disney (The Mickey Mouse Club) and Nickelodeon to Max Lucado's Hermie franchise. He is currently the lead writer for The American Bible Challenge hosted by Jeff Foxworthy on the Game Show Network. Troy and his wife have three sons.
The Publisher is BH Publishing and they can be found on facebook as well.

My Review

From the website:
Hey God, I've Got Some Guy Named Jonah in My Stomach and I Think I'm Gonna Throw Up! imagines how that great sea creature from the incident might tell his side of the story, helping kids ages 4 to 8 discover a creative way of learning about that guy who was supposed to go to Ninevah.
As soon as this book arrived my lad looked at it and was very interested in it so I sat down to read it to him.  My husband was sitting with us.  :)

My husband smiled, my boy laughed and asked tons of questions.

A winner. :)

I like books that make my boy ask questions.
I like books that make learning enjoyable.
I like books that make you remember them....and this book my lad remembers as after only one reading he was already anticipating what was going to be read next.  :)

It does take a slightly irreverent not totally accurate approach to the story of Jonah, which is why I only gave it a four star.  BUT it's fun, it makes you remember the story of Jonah, and it shows that God works things out in ways that don't always make sense, and that God always has a plan.     Having stories that aren't totally accurate to read helps to develop in a child discernment and are very useful for the purposes of teaching (should one choose to do so).

Final thoughts on this book....get it to read with your children.   It is a fun read that helps you remember the overall story of Jonah quite well.  Suitable for all different homes.   Learn about the whale really...tis a good thing. :)

This is just the first in a series. Other books available include Hey God, Can You Stop The Rain So I Can Get Off Noah's Smelly Ark? and Hey God, I'm Having an Awful Vacation in Egypt Thanks to Moses!   My son would very much like me to get these books as well.  :)

A nice little add on is the Parent Connection
The "Parent Connection" feature will help moms and dads take the story further with scripture references and tips on how to talk with their children about what really happened. There's even a free online app to make this bright retelling even more animated and interactive.

The Giveway

I get to give a copy of this book away.  :)   Would you like to win one for your very own children or those that you know?   Please, enter. :)

Review and Giveaway: This is Our Time

4/15/2013

Picture
This is a review of the movie This is our time.   I watched this movie tonight with my husband.

This is the story of five young people and how they strive to make a change in the world for God post graduation from College.

From the website:
Ethan, Luke, Alé, Ryder and Catherine are five friends connected by their strong faith. After graduating college, they each set out to make a difference in the world for God. Their ambitions are high, their passions are strong but will they have the courage to fulfill their calling regardless of what comes their way. The sacrifice they are asked to pay may just be too high. Through godly wisdom from an outside source, the group realizes that this is not their time after all, it’s all His!
I have to admit to having mixed feelings about this movie.   It was VERY slow to start, no real connection to the actors....it just was, well quite frankly boring, at the beginning.   Trying to figure out all the connections and why there were important was a bit of a boondoggle.   If I hadn't been watching this movie in order to do the review I probably would have stopped watching it.

BUT THEN a pivotal moment in the movie occurred and the movie changed.   It gained purpose and focus.  This change made me glad that I didn't walk away from it.   All of a sudden I became interested and wanted to know how everything would work out.  What would happen to Luke and Ryder and the rest of the crew?    I wanted very much to know what the solution to it all would be.

it was very cool to learn that The ministry Embrace the Village is actually a real one.  :)    You can learn more about that ministry here.

My overall opinion

Despite the slow start, it turned out to be a good movie.

This movie was very focused on Christian themes.  What is the call of God on our lives.  Watching this, and then discussing it with a group of teens, or young adults could be a lot of fun.  :)   For it is good to think and ponder some of the points raised in the movie.

Overall the acting was fairly good.
Once the movie gained focus it flowed well and was interesting to watch.

Important information

Facebook page is here.  The trailer can be watched here. (or just see below).

This is our Time will be released on DVD on April 16, 2013. You can pre-order it at ChristianCinema.com.
