New Things

5/21/2014

I have to admit.. today has been a scattered, interrupting kind of a day.

I'm out doing bunny chores... MOM!!!!   MOM!!!! Come quick!!!   My crickets are mating!!!

So I rush to the house....only to have missed that wonderful event.  The lad was full of talk about it though.  :)

I went back out to finish the bunny chores and one eight year old lad accompanies.  I continue cutting grass for them.  MOM!!!!  Come SEE!!!
Picture
What has he found you ask?
My toad... yes MY TOAD.   Fred.   Now called Fredrika as apparently Fred is a girl.   I often found this particular toad near the fence in the backyard and when I"m cutting grass in that area I keep a close look out.
The lad learned this morning he is NOT allowed to add Fredrika to his collection of toads.
BUT MOM!!!!   Was his lament.  I like her!   My other toads will like her too!!!   Can I add her to the pond when it's all finished?
No.  She's MY toad and you can leave her right where she likes to be.
And not even your best friends can keep her either.

We finish chores among much chatter about "wouldn't it be nice if we could have eusocial toads?"    Lots of fun speculation going on.  :)

Off for breakfast where we read another chapter in Little town on the prairie.  Yesterday the lad thought it funny that the older children didn't know how to behave at a party.  That they were too worried about being proper.  Today was just a fun read with the boys pulling the girls on the hand sled.   The chapter finished with Laura being worried about getting good grades so she could become a teacher so Mary could stay in School.
"But mom?   Why would she worry about that?   Couldn't her dad keep Mary in school?  Why does Laura have to do that?".
It's just another lesson in how families help each other you know?

While the lad worked on his computer work: CTC math, Science4Us and Reading Kingdom I worked on the dishes.  I stepped outside to do something and scared up a wee one.  It hopped into our old dog kennel so I called the lad out to discover what it was.   "oh mom" was his delighted soft cry "it's a baby robin!   Can I keep it?"
Picture
Mean while.. Baby robin is just a hollering "MOM MOM!!!"
And momma Robin was hollering back "YOU DASTARDLY FIEND!   LEAVE GO MY BABY!!!!!!"
Picture
So we released baby to momma's immense relief.   I promised the lad that should we ever find a baby with no parents anywhere to be found or dead he could raise it up to be released later.  But i said.. parents have to be dead or GONE.   This of course led to an impromptu lesson on the different ways momma birds help their babies grow up.  :)
Picture
momma robin promptly encouraged baby to get far away from us. :)
Anyways, back to the computer work only for the lad to be called upstairs when the biggest bumble bee I'd ever seen was buzzing around the windows.   Unfortunately it went to parts unknown before the lad made it upstairs (kinda like me and the crickets).

The Lad discovered the meaning of apostrophes and what the "O" in O'clock means.  He was impressed by neither.   What can I say?

For lunch I said "let's do something new"  So I stuck some cheese inbetween two wraps.
The lad was ever so hesitant to try it but then said "oh. that's good mom.  Next time can we try it with real cheese?".   WOOT WOOT!   My lad likes 'em.  Dad comes in and says "OH.. you made quesadeahs" (spelling???) did you like them?   Did you know they come from Mexico?   Good things to teach a child right?  :)

Schooling today... it happened ....really

4/15/2014

Normally our homeschooling day is finished by 1 p.m. sometimes... it takes us until 2, but not normally.

Today I was faced with a highly distractable child...HIGHLY distractable.   I think i can safely blame it on the weather.   We had snow last night and the air feels odd today.

Since I only have one child I can work with that.   So if it takes us all day to get through schooling, that's okay.   If it means he doesn't get to do what he wants until later in the day.. I'm totally fine with that.   Fighting doesn't do a whit of good and only makes for hard or angry feelings, none of which I deem as in good keeping with followers of God.

So we started off the day doing some chores that needed doing in light of his animal care responsibilities.  Things that today just spelled hard times for a lad with the world in his head and not enough focus to get at them.
"Lad, can I help you with these things?"
"Yes mom" was the quiet response.  "I just can't do it today".

So together we got out the hose and topped off the crayfish and river fish tank.  We even helped Dad out with his tank since he wasn't around and it needed doing.   With sadness we noted that our 10 year old pleco has died....

Together we cleaned out the vole tank.  The lad's rather disappointed with the voles right now.  They are starting to feel too much at home and are starting to defend their territories...(ie...nipping).
So we'll be reducing their population by sending some to the raptor rescue where they will start a vole colony for the raptors.
Picture
The lad then ran off to do something or other as he just needed to.

When he got back he settled down enough to work on CTC Math (though he tried two lessons that just left him frustrated... we eventually found a lesson that his mind could work with), reading kingdom and science4Us.com.    His time was interwoven with mom this and mom that.  Different stories and ideas that he comes up with when doing things.    His creative side was in high form today.  :)

Over lunch we did some reading... we've started reading interactive books where you can choose where you go next in a story.  He is thoroughly enjoying them and normally he's able to tell me quickly where he wants the story to go next but today I needed to repeat the options before he was able to make a decision.    We are currently reading through "pirate treasure of the onyx dragon".
Since we needed to take a break from the house and all it's distractions we headed off to the library to return some books.   The lad is required to read a book a day.. We've been going through the leveled readers at the library but the lad was highly resistant to getting any of them out today so I asked him what he thought he could do instead.
"Mom, can I read a chapter of Geronimo everyday?"    That sounded like a great plan to me so we came home with "Geronimo Stilton and Mighty mountain Kilimanjaro".   "Mom... do you think Geronimo gets hurt alot in this one??"
We finished our day reading from our history and science book and doing Logic of English.  Our day didn't end until 4 p.m. but it ended peacefully and well.  :)   The lad was helpful when asked to be, focused for short periods of time and it all worked out as it should.  :)

I used to find days like this highly vexing and wearing  on my brain, body and spirits.    We'd be so fed up and angry with each other.    Just relaxing and being patient is definitely the way to go.  :)  Besides, it gives him a chance to slow himself down as he watches me just going slow and easy with him...

Did we get to making cookies?  No.
Did we get to french, music or such like extras?  No.

But did we do good schooling?   For sure.  And that is what matters on days such as today.   :)   We got done what needed doing.  :)

Toys?  Games?  in Schooling?

3/2/2014

Toys and Games for Homeschool
This post is part of the TOS crew carnival.    It will go live on March 5.

There are so many games that teach so many things available on line, or as a board game or even a made up on the spot game.

My son loves to play Catopoly (like monopoly but with cats).   He enjoys being the banker though he sometimes has an unconventional method of solving the bank problems, he always manages to get it figured.  :)   This game teaches reading, math skills, strategy, and money management.
Picture
Here are some of the on-line math games we use

Apples4TheTeacher.  Math games.  Play these interactive educational games to reinforce math concepts
Cool math 4 Kids.   Cool math 4 kids is an amusement park of math, games and more - especially designed for fun, fun, FUN!    This site geared for up to 12 year olds.     They have a site for older students called Cool math.
Johnnie's Math Pages for Children.    Johnnie's Math Page is the site to find fun math for kids, math games, and even a little math homework help.        Interactive math activities from across the web have been organized by topic to make math learning enjoyable and interesting. These activities have been chosen to represent the range of math learned from kindergarten to middle school.
Picture
We used a variety of "make it up on the spot" games with the lad.  From hopping on to words that you know, to word drills (and yes.. that can be a game for a competitive child) to playing the  Dangerous  book  for Boys  game, to making up words from letter tiles.
Picture
The lad loves playing this game.  He has learned some flag coding, has to practice his reading skills, thinking skills, problem solving and so much more.   Some of the questions are too hard for him yet, but in time he'll get them.  :)

Some of the language arts on-line games we use are

Wacky tales.  I fun way to practice your grammar.   Wacky Tales are made up from words that you have provided.
Word play with Vocabulary.  Having fun with words begins at an early age and continues through the years. From Shakespeare’s quibbles to Twain’s colloquialisms, word play is an important part of language development at any age. Whether doing a crossword puzzle or playing hangman, kids love increasing their vocabulary through fun word play games online.  Word play games are an excellent way to practice spelling, increase vocabulary and keep the mind sharp.

Then of course are the games that come from doing nature study.   Walks in the woods and pretending to be a squirrel hiding behind a tree, or running from a dastardly cat!   (squirrels opinion not mine).  :)   Or like the grasshopper below he slipped when the jumped to avoid the net.  See MOM.. how he could land wrong if he was frightened!
Picture
Having fun help cement skills being learned and helps a child gain confidence I find.

What types of games (spontaneous or made) do you play with your children?  Why do you use them?  I'd love to know.  :)

Reading, Constellations and more

2/26/2014

Today we got off to a late start with our schooling.  I've been dealing with a headache for the past 10 days... doc tells me it's a particular type of migraine that is hard to get rid of.  :)   It causes dizziness which means headaches, your head ache with makes you dizzy.  In time it will leave.   Makes it slower getting going though.

Anyways, we read from the warriors over breakfast.   The lad was able to recall facts well from previous reading we had done.   Then upstairs to work on the names of Christ study that we are doing.  Today we learned about Yahweh Shamma (i may have spelled that wrong).  The Lord is There.  The authors connected it with Immanuel... God with us which I thought was rather cool.
Picture
From there we moved on to doing Story of the World where we learned about the Grand Canal in China.  Saved China (as a whole nation), cost to Sui Dynasty their leadership (high taxes, increased poverty, death, poor working conditions).   I think it's amazing what they did... despite the cost to the people involved. Five million people, six years, 1200 miles I think.   All of China now connected.   Amazing!
Then we read from our science book and were inspired to make our own Constellation viewer.    This was rather fun to do. :)   We fit Reading Kingdom into the mix as well.
Picture
The lad then worked on his math ... doing it through IXL since by this time I'm running on empty and just need to lay my head down for a spell.     We had lunch.... I did the easy chips and cheese thing, the lad had some pizza.   We finished the day with the lad doing his 20 minutes of reading.  Today his book was "Wood Frog".
All in all a nap did me a world of good afterwards and the lad had fun just relaxing with Skyrim for a while  (he's learning to read some of the options on his own as well).  :)

Just a good day of learning

2/12/2014

CurrClick
So Currclick does these freebies.    This weeks freebie is Daily Bird - Cardinal.  This was the third stage of our homeschooling today.    The first two steps were Reading Kingdom and Science4Us.
Picture
click image to get to the product. :)
So we learned a lot about Cardinals this morning, as we have a pair at our feeder on a regular basis and never see more than the one pair.   We learned that's due to their having a four acre territory that they vigorously defend.  :)  Neat huh?
Picture
Off then to do our names of Christ.   Today we learned about God being the God Most High.   The lad had a difficult time wrapping his head around that idea, of God being so very very big and wanting to be in everything we do.   But once he sorta grasped the idea he was full of conversation and I know he'll think on it.  :)
Reading about the monks in India and their worship of Buddha led us to two short studies.  One, the sadness we have for people who genuinely worship a pretend God and who in the worship can still create objects of beauty as we studied the second study.. the caves of Ajanta.   It was so neat to see what they created and how they did the work.  Using trees, water, and stone tools.  Very cool    The lad said "I would have wanted to be those hunters mom.   Hunting a tiger and then seeing all that painted stuff.  That would have been cool mom."
Picture

Math was done viaIXL this morning, he practiced seeing what symmetry was.  He will need to go over his multiplication tables sometime before bed as well. :)   Grammar was done this morning by making up a fun story with nouns, adjectives and verbs.    We had a good time laughing over the story and words used.  :)    We plan a snowshoeing time for phys ed and then doing some science from the ScienceAndMath dvd we're working through for a review.     So that's about all I have right now.  I hope to make cookies with the lad later as well, but time will tell.  Might have to wait until tomorrow for that though.

Cheers all!
Oh, before you leave, take a moment to tell me about your day?   Was it good?   Did you get much accomplished?

A book work day

10/15/2013

Today the lad an I were busy in the morning.  We read our books.

A nest for Celeste, 1000 science facts, burgess bird book for children
We worked on our bible study guide.  We so enjoy using these materials. You can find the review we did here.
Picture
When we finished that we did some work in this curriculum book.   It's grade two, so it's got the easier words for the lad to read.  We did reading comprehension and how many words can you make rhyme, and can you put them in order.    He did well.   Soon his confidence will be up again and we'll push on for harder grade three words.  :)
The lad filled out his addition facts sheet.  He figured out the patterning of it very quickly.  It was good to see that.  In the past when I have asked him to do so he struggled. Neat to see the changes a year can bring.  :)

Then he needed to do his review work for TOS.   Today it wasIXL and French Essentials.   In IXL he practiced learning the full subject of a sentence, and greater/lesser than in math.  In French Essentials we learned the accents.  There are five accents in French.

We plan to make some cookies later on today, but first I have a doctor's appointment to take care.   We'll make oatmeal raisin cookies, and make some with chocolate chips instead of raisins to please the boys in my family.  :)  The recipe we'll use is this one.

Insects and more

6/4/2013

My son is more and more using his reading skills in his learning.

Today we started a new program called Samson's Classroom.  I was able to purchase this quite inexpensively through Educents.

Everyday of doing formal homeschooling (or is the hope) my son will be doing a new sight words list and working through a reading comprehension game.   He will be practicing the spelling word list that I designed for him all week.   These are words that he has struggled with pronouncing and reading on a regular basis or are taken from his reading program.  The goal is to reduce memorization and to cement words into his brain better. :)

Today he showed me how well he knows some of the common sight words which is a confidence booster for him.   Each level he needs to do perfectly in order to advance.

Oh Insects...where does that come into play?
We continue to work through our Insects Study from In the Hands of a child.

The lad is enjoying this study.  Today we learned the exciting fact that Katydids hear through their knees.  That struck the lad in interesting and kinda funny.   But the Moon Moth totally intrigued him so we looked it up.  They don't eat when they are fully mature, and then to live as adults for only one week (surviving only on what they took in as caterpillars).   They go through five larval stages, changing colours at each stage.  We read these online articles:  Meet the Moon Moth and Wiki.
Picture
The above photo comes from this source.
The lad also continued this morning to work through mammoth math.  This morning's sheet was a puzzle he needed to solve in order to answer a question.   The lad had fun doing it but was highly disappointed in the answer.
The question: how do you get a giraffe in the refrigerator?
The answer: open the door.  Put the giraffe in.  Close the door.

Made me laugh, but the lad was just ... but mom, that won't work, giraffes are too big to fit in, you have to shorten him first!

This afternoon the lad will go for a bike ride (phys ed) and do some horitcultural work with me (planting our beans and moving his broccoli around a bit to make room for our own veggies).

We've continued to enjoy our bird feeders and I am hopeful to put up a finch feeder this afternoon and to get the lad to help me protect one or two of our feeders from the grackles.  I like grackles but they will eat a feeder empty in one afternoon and I can't afford to feed that many birds, eating that much food, ALL THE TIME.
Picture
this captures perfectly how hard the grackles will work to get free food. They don't fit on the feeder, but boy oh boy will they try hard to do so. They flap and flap and work and work. They do succeed IF they are the smaller grackles, the bigger ones just can't. :)
Oh!  It was rather cool on the way home last night.  I saw a smallish turtle on the side of the road.    So we stopped to take a look.   It was rather neat.  It was a wild eastern painted turtle.  :)
Picture
We didn't mean to, but we made him hiss at us.  It was a soft but determined KR--ISS.   He threatened us with an open mouth and everything.   But the lad commented something to the affect of "Mom, why do people call turtles slow, he can really scurry away fast".   But I pulled him out of the grass a few times so we could take a good look at him.  He was quite determined to get away from us and as soon as he was put down would get as far into the grass as we could.   When we were one looking at him, we made a path in the grass for him to get through more easily and he used it speedily to get away and down into the ditch.

This encouraged some research on the boys part.  How do you tell a girl turtle from a boy turtle?    The size of the tail for the most part.  Boys have a longer, heavier tail.

Scaredy Cat and Outdoor Learning

4/17/2013

Our day started out with working in the gardens, planning out our course for the day and then having breakfast.  Reading the paper was cause for good discussion over why people do bad things (the boston marathon bombing).  The lad finds (as do I) such badness disturbing and it's good to talk about why people do bad things (they want their own thing more than they want God).

Language Arts

Picture
Today we started a new review for Joyce Herzog, called the Scaredy Cat reading system.   I have to admit, I find this system a bit ' intimidating".  The lessons are long, it has a different approach than what I am used to, but I think we'll make it work.  I firmly suspect each lesson will take us a good week to go through.  When the lad saw me leafing through lesson one he got scared that I was going to make him do it all in one shot so I needed to reassure him.

In the above picture he's working on alphabetizing some words and then I had him read them out loud.   He was a bit confounded that not every letter in the alphabet was to be found, so needed to be reminded to just skip those letters.     He LOVED playing the word game though.  This surprised as I was positive in my head (I wasn't foolish enough to show that hesitation) that he'd not be at all interested in doing them.  But his competitive nature kicked in and he loved it.   Loved trying to figure out how to say a word.  We each played an angry bird as our character and had the angry birds learn how to say the words presented.  :)   Just fun that.

History

We did some more work on Home School in the Woods.   We spray painted our coins today.  The lad would like to make more coins so I'll see if I can squeeze that into our day tomorrow.  :)
Picture

Picture
one of my coins.

Math

We did a math lesson through tutorsoft.  Still working on multiplication, we are mostly just doing ground work and not doing actual multiplication at this point.  He continues to memorize his basic addition facts yet.   The lad still quirks his eyes and scrunches his face up as he listens so I just need to give him more time to absorb the facts a bit yet.   Soon we'll start memorizing the multiplication tables as well.

Nature Study

Picture
The lad has continued his learning into the ways and patterns of toads.  This little fellow was rediscovered today and much to-do made over him.  A house was built.
Picture
A prison area was developed that the lad was certain that toad couldn't get out of, but toad proved to be a very good climber.  :)
Picture
We decided based on patterning on toad that he is probably a bigger version of the toads we found at the Pinery last year and released into our backyard.   He would have course grown larger but we know he isn't one-eye or "big toad" that kept the lad well amused last summer.
Picture
Fishing was the name of the game in the afternoon.  We met an older fellow who let the lad take a good look at the black crappie that he caught, and told us stories about snapping turtles and how they took his catch off the holding line.   Told the lad to leave snapping turtles well enough alone (the lad was well enough impressed) and if he really wanted to catch a fish, to come back the last week of April and catch a trout or two.   That way he wouldn't need to pay to be part of the derby on the weekend.  :)

My thoughts

Supercharged Science looks confusing when you first enter the site but Aurora does a good job of helping you get your feet wet.  :)   She even has a "getting started" section for people who are new to the site to help get them acclimatized.

It's a unit study approach, VERY organized...I love that she has supply lists that are easily printed off so you can assemble everything you need before you start off a unit.   Basically, all you need to do is pick a unit, put together a Science Journal, assemble supplies, and GO.   It's as easy as that.

As you can see from the graphic below there are LOTS of units to choose from, and each unit has lots of experiments complete with explanations.
Picture
We didn't actually complete any one unit completely but we did touch on a number of them.   We basically would go to the site, check out the listings and then make a choice.  The beauty is that we can go back and pick up where we left off quite easily.   The lessons are designed to work with how your child learns best.   Sometimes we read the facts before we did an experiment and sometimes we just did the experiment and learned some facts and at other times the lad just wanted to DO stuff and figure out the whys as he went.    This aspect of the program is probably what I like best.    It's not a "you have to do this step in order to go to that step"  you can go back and forth in whatever way suits you best.

Experiments in Motion and Matter

Do I recommend it?

Yes.  I do.   I like this program.  I absolutely adore that it spurs on my son to creating his own experiments and discovering new ones.   When doing the magnets my son learned he can make a snake that wags his tail. :)  He had so much fun with the magnets.   Even "scaring" the iron filings (you can make them be like a cat in raising their hair to make themselves look bigger).
Making a hovercraft was just a hoot and the lad learned a lot as he took the experiment further.  I was unable to get a video of his "taking it further" but I did manage to capture the hovercraft working.  Suffice it to say it resulted in excited yelling of MOM!   Look at what I did!!!  (very cool bud, can you do it again???  Great...now quick clean it up before Dad comes home).  :)  Then we talked about why it worked and he came up with some good thoughts.  And just so you know.... a hovercraft CAN carry a homemade angry bird as long as the balloon is big enough.   Though cat food and balloons combined with air pressure....you really don't want to go there.  :)

Concerns

Much of the step by step guides are done using videos.   Actually seeing the videos makes it easier for children to follow the instructions.  I like this but here's my BUT..... when the internet is being wonky...lets you see the page but not download the videos, you can't get enough information to actually DO the experiments.   Adding in written how-to's would be extremely helpful in this situation and is something I would dearly love to see added.

My second concern is this is a unit for ages k-8.   Breaking down some of the language for younger students is at times a challenge.  Often my lad would say MOM, what does that word mean (and sometimes I didn't know) so I'd have to look it up.   Not sure how the creators can get around this aspect though.  Hard to balance it out for all ages.

Try it out for yourself

A Day in the Life....

3/6/2013

I've been reading lately about struggling homeschool moms (for the most part).  Some are dads, but most are moms.   Struggling with children not wanting to learn, struggling managing their time, their households, their...well...most anything.   Raising and educating a family keeps a body busy.   When I read things like this I need to make sure I keep my focus where it aught to be....doing what works for OUR family.  Not getting caught up in the "keep up with xyz family".   They are their own family, this one is MINE.

So today we started off the day doing dishes... I know... totally exciting isn't it?  I had a lad wanting very much to play the new levels of bad piggies.  What?   Let my boy play Bad Piggies rather than do "real homeschool?"   Bad Piggies IS real homeschool.  It's problem solving, working out engineering problems, paying attention to details and all sorts of things.    He has to work hard to figure out some of those levels and he's better at it than I am.   He was feeling a ... what's the word I want...unsure if he had his focus in the right spot and came in asking "mom, is it okay if I play Bad Piggies?  Am I learning things?"   I told him yes, you are...but what do YOU think you are learning?

His response
1. I have to keep trying and trying mom.
2. I have to figure out why it's not working and sometimes I just don't know.  I have to ask Dad for help!   Some of those levels are VERY hard mom.

For a seven year old, I thought those good answers.

Dishes done, we had breakfast, and looked at the paper

From the News

Picture
Part of the headline had this "the N-word".

I said to the lad...The N word?  Do you know any N words?
Does Angry birds or Bad Piggies have any N words?

Led to a whole discussion on N-words which is good practice for a beginnging reader....this lead to him wanting to know what the N-word in the paper was and we talked about how one councillor used a word beginning with N that made people get all upset with her.   I said that sometimes too people make too big of a deal over something and need to just let it go.

Normal things

We read and discussed a story in his primer that we are reading. Todays story was about a man who trusted a friend to tell the truth and what happened when the friend (who said he was ever so brave) was proven to not be ever so brave and what the result of that was.

TWO lessons done with our music program Adventus.    My but the lad enjoys this on-line music course.  :)   I don't get arguments about doing it and he'll often ask to do another lesson.    So happy I get to review this program for the Schoolhouse Review Crew.   The lad has so much fun with it though today he was disappointed...they took away the story time...and that was just another bust a gut laughing time for him.  :)  Maybe they will bring it back....

Photobucket
After this we did our Essentials in Writing Lessons.   This lesson caused some momentary confusion in the lad because he was rushing his learning.  Once he slowed down it went quite smoothly.   He had to do some thinking which, of course, is generally a good thing to do.

Lunch and then upstairs to do some book work.  Things kinda broke down here.  The lad and I worked through telling time several times over the past while but he's having some difficulty retaining this information.   So I have a clock poster from the dollarama that I just wrote on all the five minute increments.  Then a lightbulb went off. :)   AH>> "okay.. I understand mom.  BUT MOM>>> Why can't people always just say 3:15 and not a quarter past 3?  Why can't they just do it all the same?!??!"    He's much aggrieved by this.

How would YOU answer this??

Canada Study - First Nations

Doing this activity resulted in the lad saying "mom, this was good homeschooling today".

The lad loves angry birds, I love teaching him.   It doesn't matter to me if I use angry birds to instill a love of learning in him.   So our dogs are really yellow angry birds pulling a sled.  Does he know that dogs helped the Inuit get around more quickly than walking?  YEP!    We built fish (For the birds to tease the pigs with)...but the main diet of the Inuit consisted of fish, whale and such like.  Does the lad know this?  For sure!  :)  Same with the igloo, the cache, and such...angry bird theme-ing it just helps the knowledge be retained and he has retained alot.  It's very cool to see some of this stuff sink into his brain.

We are doing Canada much slower than I anticipated..but that's okay... we have a whole life ahead of us. :)

Tomorrow we paint! :)

Bannock - recipe

Came across (in our Inuit studies) this recipe for Bannock.  So we made it for supper.

Ingredients
  • 4 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ cups water
Directions
  1. Mix ingredients together to form a stiff dough.
  2. Sprinkle flour on a clean work surface. With very clean hands, knead the dough. Dust hands and dough with flour if the dough is sticky.
  3. Form in a round loaf about 1 inch high. Bake on a greased baking sheet at 350° F for 30 minutes.
  4. Serve warm with butter and jam or honey.

We served it with Honey.  The lad very much enjoyed it.   It was fairly decent, not as good as the fried bread though....not sure which we'll make for the project fair.....

Before I forget, the lad's crystals continue to grow
This was a dollar store purchase...thus far...worth the $1.25 spent on it. :)

We added to the experiment a bit.  The rocks on the right hand side, tray, green stuff came with the kit.  The popsicle stick and the large rock came from the lad.  He wanted to know if the rocks used made any difference and what would happen if you left the popsicle stick in it.

What do you think??
