Today's Efforts In Learning

2/26/2013

We started off our day with Adventus.   Today's lesson was a bit of a challenge for him to figure it out.   We needed to work together to bring understanding.   We did our question from Target the Question.    We did another lesson from A+Tutorsoft math, we did the starter lesson for multiplication.  I told him all he needed to do today was listen to it.

We plan to do the Essentials in Writing lesson when we return from the library.

At the library we drew some more First Nation Lodges, find more First Nations recipes we can make at home, and work through immigration - when people came to Canada. Ended up working on the timeline for immigration to Canada.  It needs some fine tuning yet.

Had gym time with the Homeschool group.

Then home to make supper.

This is what we are having

Easy Crockpot Pulled Pork

Yield: 6-8 servings

INGREDIENTS:1 large Vidalia onion, sliced thin
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 (4-6 lb) boneless pork butt or shoulder
¾ cup cider vinegar
4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
1 ½ teaspoons sugar
½ teaspoons dry mustard
½ teaspoon garlic salt
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS:1. Rinse pork roast under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

2. Place onions in crock-pot. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, kosher salt and pepper; mix thoroughly. Rub mixture all over roast and place the roast on top of the onions.

3. In a medium bowl, combine vinegar, Worcestershire, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic salt and cayenne pepper; whisk to combine. Drizzle about 1/3 of vinegar mixture over roast. Cover and refrigerate remaining vinegar mixture.

4. Cover crockpot; cook on low for 10-12 hours. Drizzle about 1/3 of reserved vinegar mixture over roast during last ½ hour of cooking.

5. Remove meat and onions; drain. Chop or shred meat and onions. Serve with remaining vinegar mixture or your favorite barbeque sauce.

Review: A+Tutorsoft Math Program

2/20/2013

Photobucket
For the past two weeks I've had the joy of reviewing A+Tutorsoft Online Math program with my son.     It's a good program, but I'll get on more to that later.

First off.
The company is A+Tutorsoft, Inc.
The product I used is the Online Homeschool Edition, A+ Interactive Math.

They also have a CD version as well, you can find out about that here.

A+ Interactive Math is a multi-sensory interactive math program that uses audio, visuals and text with interactive lessons, step by step instructions and instant feedback for 1st - 6th grade, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1.
Photobucket

How it works

There are a couple of main areas to this program.
1. the practice and review section.
2. the print off and do it section.

The online program
" DOES track all assignments completed online in addition to providing option for the parents to print the assignments and have them grade/track using the tools we provide."

The Lad's Thoughts

He has a strong appreciation for the "I've got it mom, can I do the test now?"
Sure is my response.
As long as he gets above 80% he can move on.  He likes that.
"Look Mom!   I did it see?"
Picture

My thoughts

  1. When we started the program it took us a bit of figure out that you need to hit the submit button in the frog belly to have the answer credited.
  2. I like the constant feedback of good job, or that is correct.  The lad likes that too.  He also likes trying to beat the screen to the punch line, just makes him giggle.   A giggling lad is one willing to learn, even when it's sometimes difficult.
  3. I like that if the answer is wrong, you can quickly click on the screen so that you can figure out yourself where you went wrong.  BUT if you don't want to figure it out yourself, the computer will explain why your answer was wrong.  I like that there is that option.   The lad LOVES that he can correct it himself and doesn't have to listen to where he went wrong.
  4. I LOVE that you can repeat a lesson several times until understanding is gained.  I never asked my son to do the Q & A until he was confident in his abilities to do so.
  5. I have a strong appreciation for GOOD customer service.  The company offers that.  Every question I've had they have been very prompt in the answering it, to the "give me your phone number and I'll give you a call".  Just love that type of service.
  6. I like that I am not tied into doing online all the time.  I can choose to print off lessons/review tests and have him just do paper work math.  The lad prefers doing the on-line work though.  :)
  7. I love that this program is not hyped.  I've looked at some programs that promise a whole variety of things and actually don't have all that.  This program gives what it says that it does.
Picture

Changes I would like to see

  1. I dislike that the addition/subtraction questions are not printed vertically in the handouts.   I can understand not doing that on-line as the question needs to be printed out by the student anyways and it forces the child to think about placement of numbers etc.   But the printouts...just seems like wasted paper to require the student to reformat the question so that it is easier for them to do.
  2. I HATE the frog.  Oh my... Do I hate that ribbit ribbit sound.  The biggest thing I would change is the frog.  The lad isn't keen on the sound it makes either...
  3. Make the log in process easier.   it's a good three or four click of the button to get to where you want to go.
  4. Mark off what lesson you stopped at.  The sheer amount of time we wasted with... did we do this one already?  A colour change or a check mark would be handy.
  5. Would be nice to have the ability to copy and paste bits of lessons so that one doesn't need to print off a whole bunch of the same lessons...but that one  could print off a variety of review type questions/tests to see knowledge learned is retained.
  6.  Interesting quirk today.  Normally we use my desktop computer to do the program, but we thought we'd move the work upstairs to the laptop.  It's an older laptop, but it was interesting that for the Q&A that the green box didn't pop up for the first four questions.   Haven't had that issue before and the lad kept asking...Mom... did I do it right?  So I am not sure if that was a glitch or the laptop issue.

Cost of the Program

The online homeschool edition for one parent and one student, which is what we used, is available monthly $19.95, quarterly $49.99 and yearly $124.99. That is a 16.67% discount off the regular price of $149.99. Before purchasing you can sign up for a one month free trial to see how you and your student like it. In my opinion, the price is great for all that is included.
 Check this out... a discount!
There is a 50% Special Promotion discount being offered!   The promotion is open until the end of March.
The coupon code that you use is SPOFFER50.

Please do know that you can try before you buy.   One month is offered free so if you are interested, please do check it out.

More Reviews

A bunch of other fine homeschooling families have had a chance to review this product as well, not just the on-line version, but the CD version as well.  Please do go and check them out.   You can go here to do that.

Changed Plans

2/20/2013

Originally our homeschooling day today was to have consisted of visiting a dairy farm and taking part in Dairy Day activities in Stratford.  Well... overnight we received about 8-10 inches of snow.   That caused buses to be cancelled and well.. roads are still being cleared so we're not doing that. :)

Ergo we stay home and do other things.

We will therefore engage in regular homeschooling activities.

Human Body

Today we looked over what a cell is made up of.  Kid Discover has an infographic in the human cell.   Will the lad understand it all?  No.. but exposure over time will help him retain the information long term.   He was quite intrigued by this and asked good questions.

Canada Study

We'll continue our efforts in drawing lodging of the First Nations people.  We ran out of time to do this today, but there's always tomorrow. :)

OH!  Almost forgot to add that right now (since our heritage is Dutch) that we are reading through an book called Kit and Kat about some twins who are Dutch.  It talks about the things that children and families would have needed to do in the past.   The lad is quite enjoying the book.  It's only available as an e-book to the best of my knowledge.

Our Regular Stuff

We started off our day with Adventus.   The lad did well with it, and even asked to do the lesson over again.  This morning he earned a new game to do.   He did struggle with understanding how to do the rhythm part and is part of I think why he wanted to do the lesson over again.  He wanted to get it right from the get go.   We did our question from Target the Question.    We did another lesson from A+Tutorsoft math, he finally understands regrouping with subtraction over 10's   So nice to see that confidence now.    Then on the Essentials in Writing lesson.  Again there were two pages to do, and he accomplished both quite handily.

We've gone back to reading from a reader.   Right now we are using a reader called: The New Days and Deeds.   i find it useful to specifically read things the lad might not necessarily choose because I find it a good way to broaden his horizons and to have something different that I can ask him questions about.

We went through our book on Telling Time.  With this book he learned all the 1/2 and quarter ways to tell time.  He learned how to write it digitally and manually.   It's a wipe book which makes it easy to correct mistakes.
Picture
We've started using a product called "Slide'n Solve Language Flash Cards".     This is a simple product that helps with critical thinking with language arts.  Asks a question, you need to draw or say the answer, and then look on the opposite side to see if you answered it correctly.   The lad is having fun with this, and it only takes a minute to do.
Picture
We did a number of pages in Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills.  Skills such as finding the blended letters, reading comprehension, regrouping when adding groups of numbers and such like.     It's a good book, American focused, but it approaches things a bit differently and the Canadian Curriculum book which is not a bad thing.  Keeps the lad thinking which is a good thing.  We will probably alternate books daily.

Science

Yesterday the lad came up with his own science experiment which today he followed up with.   "I wanted to know if water would taste good if I melted Valentine Candies in it."

The result: yes!  the water is GOOD!
Picture

Busy Day

2/19/2013

If you haven't see the Complete Canadian Curriculum books yet, you aught to check them out.  They are fairly handy for teaching youngsters a variety of subjects.   We were working in this book today because the lad has been struggling to understand a math concept taught by A+Tutorsoft Math so I thought I'd give him a gander at a simpler version of it and give him a boost in confidence that he too can do this (and he can he just needs to KNOW he can).

if you want a chance to win your own copy of it as well.. head on over to The Canadian Homeschooler and check out her give away.

Anyways, working in that book we came across a flowers poem that taught about how flowers have meanings attached to them.   So the lad asked. MOM, what flower says I'm sorry?     I did a quick google search and found EasyFlowers which told me that the Purple Hyacinth is the "I'm sorry" flower.  isn't that interesting to learn?   You can make whole bouquets up to express your thoughts to someone else (as long as they are also conversant in the meaning of flowers).

Picture
Yesterday we started our work with Adventus, and this morning continued it.   I thought it was interesting this morning how the lad came and asked.. Mom, why do they call it bird notes and whale notes?   Why couldn't they call the bottom one pig notes?  Then the angry birds and the pigs could have fun playing with each other.
Picture
So far the lad is enjoying the music program.  It's starting very slow and easy and is a bit "below him" mentally, but since he doesn't really know music terminology at all, I figured it was okay to start him lower and he can get up to speed fairly quickly.   Should be good.   Can't quite figure out why the high notes aren't picking up at times...so I've sent off an email asking about that.

What else did we do today?   um.. We did Target the question.   This weeks questions are significantly too easy for him, so I think we'll be skipping ahead a bit.   See if they are harder down the road..but I'll do that this week.  Once started a week we need to finish it or the lad gets annoyed.  :)

He read a BOB book fairly independently.   I think soon I'll have to start challenging his reading a bit more as he's really coming along here.  We also worked on some CVC words.   He got these fairly easily, though I did confuse him with A.C.T.
m -Can you make a word?
TL - yes.. CAT.
m - can you make another word?
TL - NO.. CAT is all you can make from those.
m - So I said what about TAC?
TL - TAC???
m - Yes, TAC, as in I will TAC that to your head.
TL - What does that mean momma?
m- well... it means I'll take something sticky and TAC it to your forehead.
TL - Oh... Not like a TACK for the bulletin board?
m - NO.. that would just hurt you I laughed...wouldn't it?  I wouldn't do that to you.  :)  You are a silly lad.
TL - Giggles and then tacs something to MY head.  :)

Oh....I annoyed him to no end today.   He's been struggling with his math facts so I made flash cards for him and had him go through the whole works today.   That's alot of cards to go through and he was not impressed with the amount of time it took.  BUT he knows about half of them which means tomorrow it's less work.   That didn't make his efforts any more satisfactory to him though, just resented it he did.   The biggest thing is he doesn't get the point of it.  Why memorize when I can just add it up in my head.  He doesn't quite get the speed factor aspect and how much easier it makes it to have your facts memorized.  The two pictured he knows full well, harder higher ones (such as 8 + 7 he struggles with).
Picture
OH!  I almost forgot.
We wasted some fun time today looking over the Quirkology videos.  Boy.. are they FUN to watch.  Some we had to watch a couple of times before the lad figured them out.  The lad was most intrigued by: 10 more amazing bets you will always win.
So that overall was our homeschooling day.   I did some clean up/tidy up in the book room today, not as much as I wanted to, but some anyways.

But if you have any ideas on how I can encourage sheer memorization that would be lovely.  Thanks!  :)

Skating, The Basics and First Nations

2/14/2013

We started the day by going Skating.   My goal is to skate for 1/2 an hour, more if I can do it.   Today we got to 1/2 hr and the lad was done.  I skated a bit longer as he learned how to remove his own skates. :)  This I've learned works much better if he does it without anyone around.
Picture

Did the Regular Basics

I needed to run an errand so we did that first then home to do our regular work.  Two questions from Target the Question..which he did a good job at , we did two since tomorrow we are going out for the day.  We listened again to regrouping for Subtraction with A+Tutorsoft math he's almost got the gist of it.  I"m going to send him to gramma's this weekend with some very basic math subtraction just to give him a bit of confidence that he can do this.   Doing the 100's is just messing with his mind.   We easily did The Essentials in Writing lesson.  Two pages to do today which he was surprised by, but he did the job well and had a basically good understanding as well.

Math - an Issue

Despite me doing a few different things to help my lad learn his basic math facts nothing has really worked so I"m going to the straight rote memorization.  To that end today we made some flash cards.   i wrote the facts on the front and the answers on the back so they will be self-correcting.  He knows the facts up to about the 3+'s, but sometimes he still counts in his fingers (mentally).  Though today he told me he figured out how to do the 8 and 9"s.

Mom.. I know they are close to 10 and adding 10's is EASY so I just pretend it's 10 and then I just take away 1 or 2.

I told him Good Job figuring that out.  :)
Picture

First Nations

We didn't build the sleeping racks in our longhouse yesterday, we're going to build them today but without building the actual longhouse.  We're hoping to make it a "see into" type of structure so we can show how it was used.  The goal is to put this into our homeschool groups project fair at the end of the year.
Picture
And the lad got inspired to do some other building as well.  He made some furniture for his angry bird/bad piggies toys.  Made from a simple dollar store kit.

From AW I don't wanna to .... Mom, this was the best EVER!

2/13/2013

My goodness....talk about fighting homeschooling this morning.  The lad was full of complaints and general disagreeableness this morning.

We struggled through Target the Question..which he did a good job at (sans the complaining).  We listened to two math teachings and one Q & A with A+Tutorsoft math.   The one lesson is just listening to so he can let the concept ruminate in his head for a bit as he's struggling with understanding it.   He's better today than he was last Friday so ruminating is good.   We easily did The Essentials in Writing lesson.   Once again...filled with complaints and I don't want to.. I want to PLAY mom.  I just want to PLAY.

That's all he's got on his brain this morning.
Tough luck he has to school eh?

Then we got onto our Canadian studies.   We've been learning about the First Nations people and today I had planned we'd work on a longhouse (building) and make some Indian bread.   I DON"T WANNA I wanna PLAY!!!!   Was the beseechme

Son, this will be fun.  You go get some sticks and bark, I'll go get some branches.   This will be interesting come on... no playing without getting our schooling done.

Long house - -such as what the Huron's built

The Huron people lived right about where we live now.  We've seen the one they have up in London.   We thought it would be cool to build our own.  In the spring we'd like to build a wigwam outside which will be a fun place for a boy child to play in out of the sun and he can put all his own "Stuff" into it.  Please mom!  :)

But it's winter, one toy sized long house to build.

We used these places as inspiration in our building design but ultimately did our own thing.   The Lenage longhouse.    F1W Longhouse.
Picture
Supplies: birch bark, Construction paper, Apple branches, hot glue and gun, something to use as a base, and a picture as inspiration.

We ended up rejecting the styrofoam as a base as it wasn't strong enough.  We went with a cardboard box instead.

The apple branches were used as they are somewhat flexible.  We curved them around and hot glued them in place.

Picture
We wanted to tie them together like the First Nation people would have done but couldn't for the life of us figure out how to do that so we decided to use construction paper over top.  Is it accurate?  NO.   One can't soak construction paper to make it pliable to stitch it together with stitching to go around logs.  Just won't happen.  BUT this will do the trick.

Indian Bread

The recipe is found on page 13, it's called Blackfoot Fried Indian bread.Directions

1. Sprinkle one package of dry active yeast over 1 cup of lukewarm water.  Let sit for five minutes.
2. then add 2 tbsp soft butter, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, and then 2.5-3 cups of flour.
3. Knead.  you add just as much flour as you need to make a stiff dough.  Our recipe used about 2 3/4 cup flour.
4. Let sit for one hour in a warmish place (we turned the oven on for a while then shut it off, letting the bread sit over the oven vent)
5. heat some oil in a saucepan til it's decently hot (about 175 celcius).  We used canola oil as that's my preference in cooking.
6. Form the dough into cakes approximately 3 inches across by 2 inches wide and drop into the oil carefully.   I DID THIS PART.
7. deep fry for about one minute per side or until golden brown.

As they cooked we discussed what the First Nations people might have eaten with these.   Berries!  Meat maybe mom?
Hmm.. what about honey?  I asked.
The enthusiastic response was "OH YES MOM  Honey!  They could find honey from bees right"?
Indeed they can lad, was my smiled response. :)

So we enjoyed them with honey.  They were DELICIOUS!  :)

Online Learning, Review work and First Nations work

2/6/2013

The lad did his math through A+Tutorsoft.   He did exceptionally well on this today and earned two small stickers.

We then did "target the question".  We did two questions today so tomorrow we don't need to.  The lad found this somewhat bothersome.
Picture
working with A+Tutorsoft
Continued  Essentials in Writing.  He doing the grade one material as I haven't focused on doing writing with him and I figure we can zip through things we already know and move on from there.   We did lesson 5B.  I did not have him write out the whole sentence, but he did need to read it to me and correct the mistakes in the sentences.

Picture
Correcting sentences and reading them. He did well at this. And yes, I allowed him to draw pictures of letters jumping ... the "DAD" letters helped the "child" letters behave themselves. :)

We worked some more on our First Nations people pages.
the lad got inspired to draw larger pictures of the various homes they used.

Here are some of the books we used today and yesterday

Overall A Good Day

2/5/2013

So the day started off slowly with the lad wanting to watch his Dad play a computer game.   They were having fun and I was moving slowly so that's just the way it went.

Once we got started though things went well.

The lad did his math through A+Tutorsoft.   He complains but he actually likes this program.  He just doesn't like it when I print off sheets for him to do.  He'd rather do it all on-line.  :)

We then did "target the question".  I thought the lad would like this program but thus far he finds it too easy and rather boring.   Hoping it will improve as time goes along but right now...it's very much ACH.

Started with Essentials in Writing.  He doing the grade one material as I haven't focused on doing writing with him and I figure we can zip through things we already know and move on from there.

Here we are doing lesson 5A.   Yes, we skipped the first five lessons as well..they were too easy.   And this lesson I thought would be easy but my... what you think will take five minutes stretched longer than that.

The one question was about describing your brother/sister.  he doesn't have one so I said pick something and give me five descriptive words for it.   he did Star Trek: has phasers, space, ship, enemies.  He argued about the having pets one because "MOM, I have all the pets that I want!"
Picture
Then off we went to visit a friend for lunch and a chat/play time.  Then off to do gymnastics.  We didn't really do gymnastics today so much as we just had a let's play and have fun time as a group.   He had fun and ran off some energy. :)

To the library to work on some First Nations pages I had made up.
First peoples of Canada website proved to be helpful.

We also borrowed some books from the library.  We have one page left to fill out and we hope to make a long house tomorrow and Thursday. :)

Then back to a friends house to play and relax and home for supper, some tv and bed. :)  All in all a good day.

This week is proving busy so

1/30/2013

We are focusing on the essentials this week.

We're doing A+Tutorsoft Math and Target the question.  The lad is enjoying Tutorsoft math.  He's quite uncertain about Target the question.   It's not as interactive and just asks questions.   It will help him develop his critical thinking skills though I think.  :)

We're doing our book a day reading.
We're reading in general (we always do) and when we read I ask questions, sometimes we draw pictures, and just incorporate what we learn into life.

The lad did an impromptu science experiment this morning.   He cut open some hot pad hand warmers and explored the used pack.  I think we'll open on up and see what happens if we mix it up.

As to what is keeping us busy?   Funerals, offering support to grieving families, trips to the big city, and various other endeavors.

That said we'll be doing other stuff as we can fit it in. :)  I'll add more later...

Apple Pancakes

Recipe came from All-recipes.com
Ingredients
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 egg
1 cup milk
1 1/4 cup flour
1 cup shredded apple
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Directions.
Mix the dry ingredients.
Mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl.
Mix together.
put on griddle until nicely browned on both sides.

Enjoy.
We found them to be lovely drizzled with maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

Gymnastics

My camera was too slow to get more nice pictures OR I didn't want to post pictures of children other than my son (neglected to get permission to do so).

The Snow Bear

1/23/2013

We were supposed to go to the Kitchener Children's Museum today for an event but the snow and my lack of sleep made me say I don't think so.    So we stayed home.

The lad worked on A+Tutorsoft.  The more I use this program the more I like it.  The lad likes that if he thinks he has the concept he can skip forward to the Q&A part and see if he does indeed know it.  Most of the time he does and since I"m right there when he does it, I can print off the worksheets for any areas that he struggles with.  :)   He earns a sticker for each lesson he gets done.  :)

He continues to work through the Handwriting without Tears App.   He has a goal in mind of earning some Angry Bird erasers or Tim Horton's Donut when he completely fills a screen with letter cards.

We finished off a Geronimo Stilton book.  The lad has a thorough enjoyment of these books and keeps asking...can we finish it today... just one more chapter mom?    I use these books to do reading comprehension, learning new words, and to stimulate an interest in reading.   I've recently discovered a website that is devoted to using Geronimo Stilton to teach from.  Pretty cool eh?  :)

Our big project today was to re-read the Snow Bear.

this was our book of the day to read.  I helped with the big words, but the lad needed to work hard with sounding out words.

We also talked about adjectives, adverbs,  rhyming, using the pictures to help us figure out the story and such like.  It's an excellent book to use for such things.   We discussed why an author might use certain words and how words can mean different things depending on the context.

Then the helpful ladies of the TOS review crew helped me to find this page on The Snow Bear activities which has things one can do to enhance learning.  We decided to pick a page from the book and see how well we could copy it.  We had quite the discussion on should we do it all the same or should we use mixed media to do it?   We talked about what mixed media meant and that kinda captured my sons interest so off we went to work on that.  :)

Final Result

Picture
Materials used: construction paper, cottonball, white "foxy" material, Christmas cards, pictures from magazine, and felt.
We made the musk ox shaggy, gave the hare a fuzzy tail, and had fun discussing how to do it all.  WE couldn't figure out the best way to do the musk ox horns so in the end he just got a face without horns. :)

Ideas were rejected, accepted, exclaimed over and groaned at.   Over all, it was a good cooperative effort.  It did take a long time to do though, longer than anticipated so at the end of it, we said.. "We're done schooling today".   A boy child needs to play. :)
