Review: 3D Human Body

6/14/2016

Picture
Want to see a NEAT book on the human body?  You must check out this book from Silver Dolphin Books.  It's called 3D Explorer: Human Body, discover the fascinating secrets of the human body.

It's a hands-on, check out the human body book!   5 different pop-ups of different aspects of the human body WITH a key to understanding them!   Full colour illustrations. Images to help define harder to understand terms.. like the drawings showing the different types of joints we have.  Complex 3D images, Easy to read.
Picture
My lad is always interested in learning things about the world around him, and that includes how we work.  He will frequently come to me with new stuff that he has learned and that has amazed him.   Take for instance this one on how the immune system works.
Or about a month ago, I was browsing in one of the thrift stores and we came across a technical book.. I think for doctors to learn all the parts of the body... EVERYTHING was broken down so we could look up how the ear works and we could see the tendons that are not working right in my feet and legs.  It helped both of us gain a better understanding of what is going in our bodies.

NOW.... This book doesn't have that technical detail (neither should it) but it has a ton of interesting facts to amaze and delight, not only your children, but you as mom and dad as well.   My son's response to the 3-D images was "oh wow, look at this mom!"

For those to whom it matters it does contain some evolutionary stuff in, but not much and could be easily bypassed (or used as a talking point).

The book starts off with "What is a Human" and proceeds from their to different aspects of the body, pulling up 3D images of Bones and Muscles, The brain, the eye, respiration and digestion.   It closes off with a page on the human life cycle and what it takes to grow well (ie. a balanced diet).

Each 3D image is presented with a section inbetween them, thereby adding strength to the pages.   They come with a Key to help you know what you are looking at.
Picture
I appreciated the full colour illustrations, as well as how they used colour to delineate different areas of the book.

As I read through this book I could see myself using it to teach a co-op class.   The text was informative which makes the job a whole lot easier, having the 3D models makes it so handy to view and understand.  My lad enjoyed going through the book, I have to admit, he focused on the 3D pages more than the rest (less reading you know) but he overall liked the book.    "It gives good details mom" and "I like how the pop-ups show more than one layer mom".

Raincoast Books generously provided with 3D Explorer, Human Body to review, I found it VERY interesting, and if purchasing it would find it good value for the money.   It is suitable for ages 7 and up, but the technical language may need to be read as it does talk about endrocrine, pariental etc.  Using the correct terminology it's a book I will pull out again next year with my lad as we cover some specific aspect of how the human body works.

Study Jams: the Human Body

2/23/2013

I want to use this site when doing some study on the human body with the lad.

Study Jams: the Human Body.

Here's one of the ear

Changed Plans

2/20/2013

Originally our homeschooling day today was to have consisted of visiting a dairy farm and taking part in Dairy Day activities in Stratford.  Well... overnight we received about 8-10 inches of snow.   That caused buses to be cancelled and well.. roads are still being cleared so we're not doing that. :)

Ergo we stay home and do other things.

We will therefore engage in regular homeschooling activities.

Human Body

Today we looked over what a cell is made up of.  Kid Discover has an infographic in the human cell.   Will the lad understand it all?  No.. but exposure over time will help him retain the information long term.   He was quite intrigued by this and asked good questions.

Canada Study

We'll continue our efforts in drawing lodging of the First Nations people.  We ran out of time to do this today, but there's always tomorrow. :)

OH!  Almost forgot to add that right now (since our heritage is Dutch) that we are reading through an book called Kit and Kat about some twins who are Dutch.  It talks about the things that children and families would have needed to do in the past.   The lad is quite enjoying the book.  It's only available as an e-book to the best of my knowledge.

Our Regular Stuff

We started off our day with Adventus.   The lad did well with it, and even asked to do the lesson over again.  This morning he earned a new game to do.   He did struggle with understanding how to do the rhythm part and is part of I think why he wanted to do the lesson over again.  He wanted to get it right from the get go.   We did our question from Target the Question.    We did another lesson from A+Tutorsoft math, he finally understands regrouping with subtraction over 10's   So nice to see that confidence now.    Then on the Essentials in Writing lesson.  Again there were two pages to do, and he accomplished both quite handily.

We've gone back to reading from a reader.   Right now we are using a reader called: The New Days and Deeds.   i find it useful to specifically read things the lad might not necessarily choose because I find it a good way to broaden his horizons and to have something different that I can ask him questions about.

We went through our book on Telling Time.  With this book he learned all the 1/2 and quarter ways to tell time.  He learned how to write it digitally and manually.   It's a wipe book which makes it easy to correct mistakes.
Picture
We've started using a product called "Slide'n Solve Language Flash Cards".     This is a simple product that helps with critical thinking with language arts.  Asks a question, you need to draw or say the answer, and then look on the opposite side to see if you answered it correctly.   The lad is having fun with this, and it only takes a minute to do.
Picture
We did a number of pages in Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills.  Skills such as finding the blended letters, reading comprehension, regrouping when adding groups of numbers and such like.     It's a good book, American focused, but it approaches things a bit differently and the Canadian Curriculum book which is not a bad thing.  Keeps the lad thinking which is a good thing.  We will probably alternate books daily.

Science

Yesterday the lad came up with his own science experiment which today he followed up with.   "I wanted to know if water would taste good if I melted Valentine Candies in it."

The result: yes!  the water is GOOD!

Pancreas, Spleen, Liver and Gall Bladder

1/24/2013

First we watched some videos to give us an overview of what these three parts of the body do.   I needed to break down some of the material so that the lad could understand it, but overall he understood more than I would have given him credit for.

The Pancreas

The Spleen

Liver

The Gall Bladder

we technically weren't supposed to do the liver today, but it fits well with the gall bladder that I added it.  The book we are using as a basis of study is

our human body continues to grow
Todays work led to an impromptu science experiment.   Bile helps to digest fat, much like soap does fat in the dish water.  SO, knowing that my boy said.. can we do that mom?   Therefore we did. :)  Will upload pictures later since right now the computer is being finicky. :)

Things we have worked on lately

12/9/2012

Learning today

11/20/2012

Math

We started off the day with an impromptu math lesson.

I was looking at a program on-line about doing up timelines.  It looked good until I started adding it up and I mentioned that to the lad.  He said..but mom.. it's only $11.

And I said yes...this part IS only $11 but look at what it will add up to if you like the whole program.

We ended up at $309 not including taxes or shipping.

Then the lad got inspired and said look mom, see how much it will cost if you did a class.

So we got in a small lesson on doing multiplication as well.

He was quite surprised by it all.

Good lesson in economics as well I think. :)

he also worked on XtraMath.

Sight words/Reading

Every night the lad and I read a book before bed.  last night I gave him a book and asked him to read it while I finished my supper.  He read MOST of it by himself.  he continues to struggle with some sight words, but overall he is learning to read okay.  He has a goal in mind of earning a book called "Bad Kitty" (he love the series).  He is getting mighty close to getting it.  It's very cool to watch him gaining some confidence though he thinks he fails if he can't read ALL the words (even if some of them are tough).

Human Body

The lad had fun watching some of the videos over at the Human Body Detectives Site this morning.

Canada Study

we are preparing to do a worksheet that I made up of for the First Nations people of Canada.   To that end we spent a good deal of time learning about them over at this site called Canada's First People.

Physical Education

This afternoon the lad has swimming lessons at the Y in Stratford with the HOPE group.

Human Body and experiments

11/2/2012

Human Body

Today we worked a bit more on learning about the heart.  We labeled it, and then did some experiments on figuring out how our pulse changes with how we exercise.   It was a bit of a battle as the lad wanted to really just do his own thing today.  BUT we persevered - by talking about the parts of the heart and what they do.   And then doing some experiments I got somewhere on the web but can't recall where.  Opening and shutting a hand to see how often we could do it in one minute and realizing how tiring it is.   Finding our pulse, making a homemade stethoscope, exercising and counting our pulse and such like.

It was worth it when suddenly he said.... "If i have no pulse mom, does that mean my heart isn't working"?   My response was .. "You got it buddy.  No pulse, no heartbeat".   He grinned and all was good.  :)

Candy Experiments

One of my facebook links sent me over to this Candy Experiment.    So.. since we had candy we thought we'd try it.  We were MOST interested in trying the M&M's one - we wanted to see the M float.  BUT.. well...  Here's what happened in that one:
We did experiment with a whole variety of candies though.   We chose identical candies and put one in hot and one in cold.

The one that simply amazed both of us was the fizzy ones.   We were astonished at the sheer amount of bubbles that came shooting out the fizzy when it was placed in hot water.  Like the M&M it disappeared in no time flat.    The fizzy when put into cold water bubbled slowly and over time hollowed out in the middle.  The lad thought this quite interesting and BEGGED to eat it.

The one that disgusted us...the gobstoppers.   MOST candies..the water tasted sweet or at least sort of like the candy.  Gobstoppers...just...ICK...and hence forth I have NO desire to EVER eat one again.

Halloween Candy when placed in hot water exuded this white waxy film (looked icky but the lad said... MMMM).  AND caramels dissolved fairly quickly BUT left this sticky spot behind on the cup that took a couple doses of oil to get off.  Smeared all over the cup.

Rolo pops on a stick...dissolved slowly in cold water, fairly fast in hot but the rolo part didn't dissolve.  the lad put it in his mouth and immediately spit it out.  YUCK!  It was a very pale colour which made me wonder if the hot water sucked the colour/flavour out?

Anyways, some pics.  They might be a bit jumbled, I'll try to comment.

Our Reading

Today we learned about some Chinese explorers.  Mostly about Zheng He.  He sailed all over the place, mostly to Africa, bringing back animals and other goods to show the emperor.   He used a compass to get around.

SO.. we made a compass!

Picture
we read part of "the trail of the meat".  This was a very long chapter and comes from Jack London's call of the wild.  The lad was intrigued but said...haven't we read this before?   and yes, I had started, a while back, to read this book to him in the car.   Good to remember.
Picture
Today we learned about the Desert Tortoise and The Turkey Vulture.  The lad is quite familiar with the turkey vulture and found it interesting that it doesn't nest in a tree. But mom.. they fly up high!  they should use a tree, it's safer.
The Star and the Lily.   This Indian folk tale made the lad snort.   Mom...that's just not true!   Did they really believe that?

Physical Education

We went out for a walk. The lad thought it behooved him to complain for a fair while since just walking is "boring".  But he found some sticks and life seemed much better after that.  Boys and sticks...makes life so much better.  :)

Learning about the heart

10/10/2012

We started off at the Minneapolis Heart Institution Foundation.   WOW.. that's all I can say about this very informative site.  For your non-readers you will need to sit down with them and read the pages to them.

We then stopped over at the Franklin Institute to learn about the general make-up of the heart.    This is a more grown up, or maturer child site, so if you have young ones, preview it first. :)   Do make sure you visit the enrichment pages.    We did this one and This one.

Then we stopped over here at e-learning for kids  to learn more about the circulation system of the body.   Again, if you are working with a non-reader, sit with your child to help him understand.     The how the body works site was helpful in understanding the heart as well. :)

We headed over here to download some human body lapbooks.    We stopped by here as well.    We stopped by Slimgoodbody where I picked up some resources.

We built a jigsaw heart as well.

After we did all this, we coloured our hearts.   This took a bit of discussion since the lad learned that blood isn't actually blue, it's more like a really dark red so he was unwilling to colour his heart red and blue.  We compromised with a reddish brown.  I have to admit, I like how it turned out.

AND he remembered what we talked about...how veins ooze and arteries spurt since he had a bit of a nick on his foot tonight and he commented... Mom, I cut my vein here, see how it oozes?  :)

Since it has been a month since we took measurements we did them today, the lad has grown a 1/4 inch, and my efforts to decrease in size have been somewhat fruitful.

Reading

We did our normal reading again today.  All four books.  Can't remember exactly right now what all we did. :)  But we did read them!  :)

LearningPod Video

9/20/2012

really liked this video Called  the Learning brain

The Brain, Science and more

9/20/2012

One of the joys of homeschooling is to have incredibly flexible days.

We can start at 9 a.m., or we can start at 1130... it all works.

Human Body - the brain

On-line resoures
Used the brain picture on this page with the words cut away so the lad needed to figure out what each part is called.   He used the one on this page as a sort of guide.
We learned, using this page,  about how brains don't work the same on each side, the left being more logical, thinking, fine-tuning and the right being creative, big picture focused.   And how they relate to each other...how when we just read a book we don't worry about the grammar of a sentence (right brain big picture) or we can learn the grammar (left brain) so the right brain can be the big picture easier.   The lad compared that to thinking of a picture and then taking the time to draw things correctly.  :)

Most pictures we see of the brain show a side view of it, so I thought it pertinent to show the lad how a different view of the brain will show different things.  So this site gave us a top-down view which showed how the olfactory bulbs are hidden inside the frontal lobe.

We very briefly talked about how we can help the brain learn by using different things to help it.   This site proved be helpful in that regard.

If I have time later this week we'll be making these brain food items...but I haven't been able to download it yet.  (need to restart firefox and all that).

We used some book resources to add some lapbooking elements to our study of the brain.

Sight Word

From the flashkids, sightword book we practiced the word Long.   The lad's sentence was "a long party with flies to eat".     The entirety of the sentences he has been writing have all be spider themed.  "Spiders scared them"  "I like spiders"  "I would like a spider"  "come here spider"   Makes me smile. :)

Art

For art we are using "Canadian Art Ideas"  This resource is produced by Canadian Curriculum Teaching Resource.   I have to say, I really like this book and if I could link it on Amazon I would.  It spells things out in a logical manner and I can tweak it as per the lad's interests.  I can also use the ideas, find a project that fulfills it's mandate and then teach the lesson.   The pages themselves are rather boring, but I can use the ideas and as a NON-arts minded individual having a focus is working well for me.  :)

Our lesson today was on Complementary colours.

Reading

as you all know by now, my reading encompasses four regular books at this time (at least that I document in the mornings). :)   We have others we read at night.

This morning we read from
World History.   The lad found this one to be quite interesting today, he kept asking all sorts of questions.  It was about how knights had different sorts of helmets and they protected their horses as well.  It also mentioned strategy used in battle which highly intrigued my lad.  We play a game on facebook called Social Empires and it fits in well with our history lessons, so he's slowly learning some strategy as he "kills" trolls.  :)

Classic animal stories: bellerophon and pegasus.   These odd names are a good way to teach phonics and how one uses them to pronounce unusual names. :)   This story seemed sad to the boy.   I can't say I much liked the ending of it either.

50 Magical Stories: An unexpected Opening.   This story made us want to get the rest of the book as it was just the start of larger book.   We want to know what happens next.  Anyone have a copy of "The brass bottle" by F. Anstey?

The Ultimate Guide to wildlife of North America: brought us the Great Egret and the Tiger Salamander.   The great egret was hunted by people because he was so pretty.  The Tiger Salamander has a wee tiny area that it lives around here, much to my son's chagrin as he'd like to catch one and build just the right place for it to live. :)

Science Experiment

This was simply just fun to do.  :)   Seriously, it was just fun.  Take a FRESH bar of Ivory soap.  Chop it up a bit, doesn't need to be as fine as the lad did it.  Put it in a microwave from 75-90 seconds and just watch the magic. (yes I know, not really magic).  But fun none-the-less.  :)
Since the lad battled with me about taking some of the flakes to see if I could remake a soap bar I chose the smallest form I had (a dog bone), mixed in two drops of food colouring to about 1/2 cup flakes, added a wee bit of water,... perhaps a tsp?  and squished altogether in a ziploc bag and used a soft spatula to remove it.   Will be placed in the fridge to "set".  We'll see how it turns out.  I had the lad draw step by step pictures in our science experiment book.
