Planning... it's a journey

10/26/2016

So.... planning.  It's something my son covets dearly.  HE LOVES to know what is going on so he can plan his life out around mine.  Do you have a child like that in your home?
Picture
ONCE he knows what is going on, he's content.   He will frequently double check as the day goes along... but overall, once he knows he's content.    It's been a work in progress and I CANNOT tell you for sure if this system will even work for him.    What he wants is a scratch paper write out, but I find when I do that, then either I put too much on the paper (cause I write everything down we want to do) or I forget things and the lad gets stressed because I'll say "OH, I forgot about "X"" OR I just don't get the list written.  Which means tons of questions all day long.

I am hoping that this method works better than that the one I was hoping to do this year (Mama Planner) and is less labour intensive than this paper method I tried.

Mama Planner was a no go... one lad thought it was too much writing and looked like way too much work to do when I wrote it out in columns.. and when I asked if he could write out what he needed to do generated looks of horror and being backed up by dad.  :)

The paper method kinda worked.  Really it did.  It went through several metamorphoses...but the checking things off and getting confused about meals and stuff... it was WAY more work that what either of us wanted.

This calendar method is rather simple and works around my needs and around the lads.  :)  It follows mostly the schedule we've been hashing out for the last month and a half.  He's happy with routine, but is pleased to switch it out if it benefits him.  :)  For instance sometimes we don't do art because well.. yard work or a museum/field trip awaits or sunny weather let's go pokemon going!!! happens.  :)
Picture
You may be able to see that I colour coded it.   Grey for the dailies, Pink for astonomy, blue for veritas press, green for math and such like.   We've needed to work things out.. like astronomy and German only happen three days a week.

Because Friday are our co-op days having our Fridays be a do it differently day works best for us, means no change in routine for a routine oriented lad, all that changes in location.  :)   We do almost everything different on Fridays except the lad likes to do his Veritas Press studies every day.  :)

I don't write down specific lessons since one thing simply follows the next.  Do one lesson, then do the next, it's just how life goes.  If you don't understand something in the next lesson, then go back and do the last lesson again until you know where you misunderstand things, or remember to ask questions, and then proceed on to the next thing.   The lad knows I or Dad are always available for the asking of questions so no excuses for not being able to get help.  :)

But I digress.   I just used a $10 calendar from Costco.  not too expensive, easily dumped if doesn't work, but I genuinely think that this will give him a good overview without causing stress, and letting him know what to expect for the next day.

Hopefully all hearts will be happy.  :)

Tell me though...just in case it doesn't... what do you non-organized type of mammas do with your routine oriented children to keep the household sane?   More ideas are always good.  :)

Well.. NOAA, this is a find

Homeschool freebie of the day posted this link to NOAA 2ooth Activity book.

Well, well.. I think I may have found what I can do for HOPE days.  (that's our spring or fall session of group teaching with my homeschool group).

Anyways, it's rather a neat resource put out by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.    Experiments, Learning, Explanation, Thought provoking.

I browsed through a great deal of it.  Downloaded the entire activity book.  I downloaded it as separate parts for ease of use.  :)   Found that most of it worked really well, but couldn't figure out the "game" that is linked on one of the pages.   if someone else can.. LOVELY.  :)

How we do some of our learning

12/10/2012

Picture
The lad and I do a great deal of reading.

We mostly read in the morning and at night.

In the morning we read history and various think about type of stories.  Fairy tales and tales of imagination.   World history.  Predominately short snippets.  These are supplemented with lapbooks and small unit studies as I find them.

In the evening we read books about our main topics of studies (this year the human body and Canada).   We read one primer.   One chapter book (currently going through the Bad Kitty books.   One book which we read together.  A bible story book.  And a book on a topic of the lad's choosing (for now that's a book on spiders).

I find it fascinating, as I often let the lad play while we read, how often he incorporates what we read about into his play.    I can also tell when he's totally uninterested in a book or story.  No questions, no comments, barely even an acknowledgement, but when something interests him he'll interrupt and ask questions, and he'll often tie things together from what we've learned or read about in the past.

Sarnia, Ontario

9/8/2012

I need to go to Sarnia Ontario on September 22.
So I'm looking for things that are homeschool related to do with the lad.

Things I'm considering

1. the bluewater bridge.
Despite the in your face warning not to copy pics from this site, they have good pics of the bridge going up. :)
Wiki tells me this about the history
The original span is a cantilever truss bridge with a total length of 6,178 feet (1,883 m) and a main span of 871 feet (265 m). The second, newer span is a continuous tied-arch bridge with a total length of 6,109 feet (1,862 m) and a main span of 922 feet (281 m).   ....
The first bridge was opened to traffic on October 10, 1938.     .....
The second three-lane bridge, just south of the first bridge, opened on July 22, 1997.

2. the Stones 'N Bones museum.
this sounds like an interesting museum to go to with plenty of things to talk with a lad about.

Do you have any other suggestions of things we might consider?

I posted the question of what to do in Sarnia and got these responses:

1. Stones n Bones museum is worth a look, especially if you are able to catch Jim there to give you a tour.  He knows EVERYTHING about everything they have on display.  http://www.stonesnbones.ca/  Its located in a store front downtown and doesnt look like a real museum from the outside, but has a pretty impressive collection once you get in.  The price is right too!  Make sure you take them 'under the bridge" for fries.  The fries are decent, but eating them on a bench overlooking the river and the USA makes them very pleasant.  If a cargo ship goes under the bridge, which happens at regular intervals, get the kids to pump their arms and if the captain sees them, he'll blow the foghorn.  If you've never really seen it, take a drive south on hwy 40 and check out the chemical valley.  Its one thing to know its there, but quite another to see the magnitude of operations that spans the length of the St Clair river.  Pay special attention as you go over the overpass on Vidal st.  On your right, you can see the mouth of the St Clair Tunnel that goes under the St Clair River to the USA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clair_Tunnel  A bit of an engineering marvel for its time.

2. You might like to check out Canatara Park as they have an animal farm when you enter the park off of Christina St., just head straight through rather than taking the bend in the road that leads to the park and beach. When heading towards the beach area there is also Lake Chipican where many ducks, geese usually are.You might also like to view the Twin Bluewater Bridge which you can access off of Michigan Rd. I believe. Here you can watch the big ships come in or go near the old lighthouse which you can access off of Michigan & Alfred. In Pt.Edward there is the area where the Marina is.

3. There is a really great Animal Farm in Canatara Park. Goats, ponies, ducks, that kind of thing. And there are nice walking trails through Canatara around the pond. It's off of Christina St.  "http://www.city.sarnia.on.ca/pdf/canatarabro.pdf"

5. Here are a few sites to check out for Sarnia and Lambton County.

Planning for next year

8/5/2012

So my over-arching themes for next year are going to be two fold.

1. the study of the human body.    This will be a multi-week study.   We will start with the brain (I think) and work our way through, though I might do a basic over view first of the different areas of the body first (aka skin, bones, muscles etc).   I bought a few books to help me with this, as well as we have a good book of the human body here at home.

2. the study of Canada.    We will do some of the native stuff, then work at immigration, and then he'll need to interview his grandparents on how they came over from Holland.   I've been thinking on how I want to do this when Homeschool Freebie of the Day sent me a link to a music education site called Keeping Score.    This of course got me thinking on the importance of learning some of the music of the time periods as well.

Throughout these studies we will learn reading and math and such like.   But rather than try to have monthly themes, I figured it would work better to have an over-arching theme which would be more doable in the long run.  :)

stuff I want to look at more

7/22/2012

I'm seriously considering getting the anatomy book for the lad for next year.   That and the journalling book that goes with it.  Apologia is having a 30% off sale right now.

then there's the national geographic for kids, which is on sale right now.

And then there's this list of a variety of homeschool planners which I want to go through.  Mind, since I get TOS magazine I get their planner for free and it's simply packed with ideas and different ways to do things that I wonder if I should bother.

anyways, time for bed.  Will check this all out tomorrow.
