Review: Fascinating Education - Chemistry

11/4/2014

Six weeks of Fascinating Education and I understand some of the chemistry I totally missed in highschool better!   WOOT WOOT!   We had success!  :)   Come along with me as I show you what Fascinating Education can do for you.  Really.. it's fascinating!
Picture
First off, let me tell you that Fascinating Education is on on-line curricula.   You can take the following courses:
Fascinating Biology: Learn the basics of biology: components of life, adapting to changes in environment, maintaining a stable internal environment.
Fascinating Chemistry: learn about how atoms bond, molecular changes and all the basics of chemistry.
Fascinating Physics
: Study the laws of nature regarding movement, sound and energy.
Just so you know, there are sample lessons on each of the main pages so you can check out how it all works yourself.

Developed by Dr.
Margulies in an effort to teach science to those with little or no science background.  So he uses plain English using a structured story format.

I took the Fascinating Chemistry online curriculum.  I found it to be an easy to use program, with audio and visual components.  In fact it was extremely helpful that the text was able to be printed off and read when the house needed to be quiet.  :)   Our household battled illness for about 2.5 weeks during the review period.   So I would print off the transcript of each lesson and read it over.  It went slowly as things are apt to do when one has a raging headache and needs to meet needs within a household as well.

The 18 lessons are as follows:

Lesson 1: The Intramolecular Bond
Lesson 2: The Ionic Bond
Lesson 3: The Covalent Bond
Lesson 4: The Polar Covalent Bond
Lesson 5: The Metallic Bond, Part 1
Lesson 6: The Metallic Bond, Part 2
Lesson 7: Heat
Lesson 8: Air Pressure
Lesson 9: Properties of Water
Lesson 10: The Mole
Lesson 11: Gases
Lesson 12: Solutions
Lesson 13: Chemical Reactions
Lesson 14: Orbitals
Lesson 15: Electrochemistry
Lesson 16: Polymers
Lesson 17: The Nucleus
Lesson 18: Final Problems

Once you log into Fascinating Education, you come to a page that looks like this:

When you click on the chemistry page you start here.   Each of the  boxes is a lesson.

As you can see there are three boxes under each large picture.  They say lesson, script and test.

On my computer when I click on a lesson it opens in a new window.

Once the video loads it starts to play automatically.  You can stop and start it as needed and even jump ahead or go back.    It is very easy to use.  The table of contents of quite clear in what will be taught.

There are 18 lessons in all.   If you come across a word that you don't know, just pause the video and look into the glossary.  The glossary is on the left hand side next to the Menu button (visible when using the video).

One of the aspects to this program that I thoroughly enjoyed was the "what you know" section at the end of each video.    Learning these facts well would enable the student to do well on the section test.
Picture
When taking a test, your results are very easy to figure out how you did on it.   If you go through the questions it will tell you what you did wrong as well so that you can study the materials further if desired.
Picture
Even if you don't have a strong backing in the sciences Fascinating Education breaks down the material in thin slices so that it is easily understood.       The 12 labs are easy to understand and are listed in their own password-secured area (for safety purposes).   The program remembers where stopped (if you get called away from a lesson), asking if you would like to continue from where you left off.

It's a good all round program that should suit your middle to  highschool science student quite nicely.     Bite-sized bites to enable the easier retention of information without a background in the sciences needed.    Material summarized to make the main points well understood.  Audio and visual materials to meet the needs of most students, with 12 labs to cement the learning.

It's a good course and worked well for helping me to bone up on my chemistry.  :)   Each lesson on average takes about an hour to do.  I found myself repeating lessons to ensure good retention on my part.
Product Details.
