Review: Homemaker's Mentor

10/9/2013

The Homemaker’s Mentor grew from the creative idea of Martha Greene and Rebekah Wilson.  They ran a website that offered help in the areas of homemaking that many people needed.   Offering hands on help with cleaning, cooking, organizing, decorating, and other such useful skills.

This collection is like a big ole classroom waiting to teach you skills.

What I thought and How I Used it.
I read through most of the books included in this collection, found them simple and straightforward, easy to read, not confusing, and encouraging to try new skills.     Due to various issues in our household I did not have a chance to complete many of the projects...but I did get to some of them.

i made bath salts with my eight year old. He found it to be fun. He chose the colour, add the scent though wasn't sure he liked it. He asked TONS of questions while doing so. :) Hubby came in and said "whoa...what smells so good?"
As I have time over the next couple of weeks to complete more projects I'll do up a post or two on them.  :)   Let's have fun eh?  :)
Picture
We also made some granola... if I had known making granola was so very simple, I would have been making it long ago. Perhaps in two weeks when I have more time at hand, I'll go on to experiment with making different granolas. I see Christmas presents on the horizon. :)
I also found hints to help with housekeeping, various recipes, directions for making my own shower curtain (plan to do so just haven't had the time), and just a whole whack of other things.  Lots of things in this package to keep you busy that's for sure.

Here's comes the cruncher.
Is this something I would recommend you buy?
I don't know, I honestly don't know.   Here's why.

When I looked through the collection I was sad that many of the categories only had one file it.   Some of which I have gotten free through a freebie site.  Many of them have a vintage look (deliberately so I think).....  And so I thought hmm.. with a little legwork I could have gotten these myself.  And would I want to pay someone for something I can do myself?  Aaah...not really.   But in truth I need to say that only 11 of these books are available in the public domain, one is completely new and the rest were in from a private site that has now released them for public sale.     There is lots of good stuff in this collection.   It's just my frugality stating... would I want to buy something that with some diligence and effort on my part I could find on my own?  (make sense?)

YET.... On the other hand... I never would have thought about making my own shower curtain if it hadn't been for this collection.   I never would have learned how EASY it is to make bath salts and granola.   This collection encouraged me to do so... if only to say I've worked on doing a good review for you all. .. but it is SO much fun to learn new things!     I am so happy that I took the risk on learning something new.  Now I can easily make hubby and son happy making my OWN granola.  Pretty neat huh?   Also someone had to do the work to put the collection together, and that is worth something yes?  Indeed.

So if you want to be inspired, and you are willing to pay someone to put it all together for you, get this collection WHILE it is still on sale.   It's on sale until the 18th of October so strike while the iron is hot.  :)  Go ahead.. be inspired to try something new.  You'll be glad you did.  :)

Here's another inspiration.  it was SUCH a hit. :)   Pumpkin Bars.

I had thought there were some public domain looking items as well, but upon closer inspection most of these are authored by just one or two people. THere's a handful of about 6 items tacked onto the end that are public domain. The main book, the Vintage Treasury, is a new book and definitely not public domain... but made to look like something that would be. I think the whole thing is kind of made to look that way, but truly - this is a huge collection. I'd invite you to dig a little deeper and see if you find the same thing to be true. :) Thanks for posting - be blessed!

Thanks DaLynn... My assumption...and yes, i should have looked into it further myself, was that if some of it was public domain and easily found that the rest would be too. I am very aware there is much in this collection...hence my recommendation to buy it while it is on sale. I'd always recommend that anyways. :) Frugalist at heart. by the same token, if people wanted to work for it a bit... they could find much of this material on-line for themselves. :) It's the nature of what it is. :) Thanks for your feedback, makes the review that much more thorough.

Hi Annette,

Thank you for the kind review!

Just to clarify: The only resources on the CD that are public domain are the six ebooks included as a freebie bonus in a separate folder. All the Homemaker's Mentor lessons and tutorials, ebooks, unit studies, videos, etc. are original works... and none of them have ever been available as freebies (unless someone illegally distributes them).

Just wanted to make that clarification. Thanks again!

I want this collection not just for all the cool stuff I can learn, but for the lessons that have been provided for my kiddos. I can teach my daughter to cook and sew, but how cool to really, deliberately, incorporate math and science, art, literature, reading, writing, etc.

I would love to win this collection!!! There are so many useful resources that would help me become a better homemaker, hostess, home manager, mom, and more. I know that the first thing I would check out are all the recipes!!! Then, I would read through the books about cleaning and home management. I would like to teach me daughter about crafting and sewing. I noticed that there were specie units on other blog reviews if those were included I would use them with my daughter! Thank you for the chan e to win this CD.

Looks like a neat idea! Love the bath salts idea! That would make good Christmas presents for friends and family!
